Quesions about Disney College Program

Hi! I am a sophomore at a college in Winter Park, FL, and I am considering applying for the Disney College Program for either the fall or spring semester of my junior year. I love Walt Disney World and spend quite a bit of time there since I go to college so close by. I have a few questions for an alumni of the program:

1.) Was it worth it?

2.) Through various forums, I have heard that there are a lot of drugs/alcohol/______/partying in the housing provided. I have no intention on taking part in any of the above. I know that these things exist everywhere - I live in dorms at a college, so I see it everyday. But, is it easy to avoid? Is there a crowd that does not get involved in the party scene?

3.) Did you receive the position you wanted? I would be thrilled to be a fur character, and I understand this requires a separate audition. I have extensive experience as a costumed character through roles over the summer at my local library - would they consider that kind of experience during the interview?

Any other advice/opinion from the experience would be great! Thanks so much!

1.) It was an experience of a life time and I loved my CP. You'll also talk to some people who didn't like their program so much. It's definitely an experience where you get out what you put in. I would recommend the program to most any college student.

2.) It's a college-type environment considering all of the participants are in college sure, but I would definitely say you are in control of what you want to take part in and you'll be able to find a group that's right for you.

3.) I know some people who did, others who didn't, my best advice for getting the role you'd most like is to apply early and stress the role you want appropriately during your interview. As for entertainment roles, the auditions play the biggest part in getting that role.

Try doing a little more searching on the forums here and on facebook to find more info, there's a lot out there!

Good luck! Look for the Fall '12 program applications to come out later this month!

1) YES. It was definitely worth it. The people who didn't like it are usually the people who go down thinking they are going to party the whole time, and not work. So you just have to expect to be working a lot. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime for me.

2) There are 2 main apartments (well 3 but one was reserved for international students). When I was there at least, Vista way was known as the more social party one and Chatham Square was known for being quieter. I'm not really sure why that is, but that's how it was. You don't get to pick your room mates unless you show up with someone on the same day and decide to room with them, so getting a good room mate is kind of luck of the draw. But overall, I'd say you can stay away from the partying.

3) Like the person above me said, I would stress at the interview what role (or roles) you would want the most. And if there are any roles that you really wouldn't want to do, don't check them on the sheet.

My daughter is down there now and absulutely loving it!!! She checked in on 1/9 and is staying in Patterson. Had a few roommate issues in the beginning but thank goodness, those have been worked out.

She asked for attractions and thats what she got assigned to. Initially she wanted to be a character and did go to audtions to no avail........we still can't figure out what they are looking for. In any event, she is so happy where she is working that if they offered her a princess dress right now - she says she would turn it down.

Classes started this week, so that will be another interesting aspect.

Good luck on your interview and remember to smile, smile, smile while you are on the phone. And don't limit your choices.

1. YES!! It was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. As a hospitality major it was perfectly applicable for my major but I learned so much about how to deal with people and work as a team and so many other things. I stayed on as a campus rep and just applied to work back down there starting this summer after graduation!! On top of that, I had the most incredible time and met some of the most amazing people from all over the world. They are some of my best friends and I can't imagine not having them around!

2. I'm not a big party person either so I totally understand you being wary of this. There is a lot of it but there are also plenty of people that don't do it as well. Same as college. If you're worried about this a great way to avoid it is once you're accepted on your program you have the opportunity to pick a roommate. Finding one (or more) roommates on one of the facebook groups that seems to have similar values as you will make it way better. You can also request to live in wellness housing if you're over 21. If you're under you'll automatically be put there. The rules in wellness housing for drugs and alcohol are really strict so you're less likely to run into problems in your room.

3. I did receive the role I wanted but that isn't always the case. Fur character is VERY competitive but your prior experience will definitely help you! Be sure if you make it that far to bring that up in your interview although your audition will be the main thing that helps them determine if you're a good fit for a character.

My other advice...GO FOR IT! It's an incredible experience and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Good Luck!!

My son is there now, in Patterson. Checked in on Jan 25. He's working quick service at Pecos Bill, already working extra hours.

Loves it from all I can tell so far!
