Projects you're glad were cancelled

I wish we could have seen Eddie Sotto's Tomorrowland refresh for Tokyo Disneyland BUT OLC decided to invest in building DisneySea instead, so....I'm glad they kept their existing Tomorrowland

Glad that Disney's take on Harry Potter was canceled, both because it was underwhelming and because The Wizarding World, imperfect though it is, clearly is much more the correct kind of thing to build for that property.

That said, I also think both Disney and Universal have managed to learn some of the wrong lessons from the Wizarding World's successes, and I don't love the impact that has had.

Add Universal’s original concept to that list as well. They would have added Hogwarts but Merlinwood was to largely stay with some new signs.

Glad they decided to not do Disney's America.......

Only to see that most of the ideas get shifted to DCA........

And now there's a park coming to Rapid City South Dakota looking veeeerrryy suspiciously like Disney's America which was announced at IAAPA called Libertyland.

One of the rare circumstances where what we got ended up being better than what was initially pitched. Plans tend to get less ambitious as things progress rather than more.

Somewhat related - For as good as Forbidden Journey is, I can't help but lament that Universal sort of squandered their chance at building a larger Hogwarts Castle experience. With how ambitious they've shown to be on Diagon Alley and the forthcoming Wizarding land in Epic Universe, it's a shame we're unlikely to see such expansive effort put towards Hogwarts Castle itself, despite being the central and most exciting single location in that entire franchise. They were obviously emboldened after the success of Hogsmeade, but it's a shame that Hogwarts recieved sort of a skimpy treatment when compared to the newer lands. The Castle should absolutely have been designed with easy expansion opportunities in mind, and it doesn't seem like it was.

They seem to think the way around this is having the Floo Network, so they can have parts of Hogwarts elsewhere.

But besides the obvious confusion of having the same location in multiple parks, the whole idea of exploring Hogwarts and spending more time inside should have been part of the experience from the beginning. They could have had all of Merlinwood and more just be Hogwarts because there's so many sections of the castle and its grounds you could build.

At Islands of Adventure it makes sense. It was slotted into relatively tightly and the project was done for what is now a pittance during a time when it seemed like GE and Blackstone might walk away at any minute. Where it’s truly ridiculous is a park like Universal Studios Beijing where they had the space and money to reinvent and expand the experience.

I've said this many times.

Even if you think Forbidden Journey is an outright masterpiece -- I personally do not; it's great in sections, but far too much of the ride is a relatively boring/bland broom flight simulation, and it's physically unpleasant to actually ride due to jerkiness (at least it was when I've been on it; I've heard that can vary and it's smooth for some people) -- they've still mostly wasted Hogwarts.

Hogwarts is the setting for the vast majority of the IP (Fantastic Beasts excluded) and it's basically just a facade and a few queue areas (which are very well done) in the park.

It's understandable that they did what they did as a starting point, but they absolutely should have added other Hogwarts locations by now.

LeFou's Brew, Blue Milk, that Cars Land drink...how many times has Disney tried to come up with the next Butterbeer alone?
And yet they can't seem to do it. Blue Milk really seemed like their best shot. Which, for the record, I do enjoy. But it's no Butterbeer.

Totally - Hogsmeade was definitely a hail mary for the park, and luckily they stuck the landing. It's just sort of ironic that in doing that they painted themselves into a corner with Hogwarts itself despite it hosting the most potential for the IP. Fantastic Beasts is getting a massive land at Epic Universe while we're stuck with a cliffnotes version of Hogwarts Castle. It makes sense in the progression of events, but I wonder if guests who don't know all that will wonder why Diagon and Paris are so sweeping while Hogwarts remains strangely untapped.

Beijing should have built Hogwarts on steroids. You could do a whole land just out of the Castle alone.

Really, you could do a whole park on the IP. I'm sort of surprised they haven't tried it at this point. Build one in the UK that throws the kitchen sink at everything and just print money forever. But then, I guess they'd have done it if they thought that'd be the case.

Where at though? AFAIK Islands doesn't have the most room for expansions. I don't see how they can really expand Hogwarts itself with how its currently placed there; I guess you could have a queue that "tunnels you in" or something?

I think using Hagrid & the forest sections of the Hogwarts ground has made a lot of sense. It's given us one of the GOAT rides & a solid kiddy coaster.

I think you have to put that aside a bit to actually take advantage of the most important setting. There should be a restaurant in the Great Hall, e.g., and there's so much else they can do.

The HP area at Epic Universe should just be Hogwarts/the Hogwarts grounds -- the fact that it already exists as a facade at Islands of Adventure shouldn't stop them, especially since it's designed to look off in the distance at IoA.

I'd personally have liked that to happen. But I think that it would have taken away alot from IOA's Potter section; it wouldn't be a draw for that park anymore at that point.

I don't know about that -- Ollivander's, and more importantly Hagrid's and Forbidden Journey, would still be there. Hogwarts isn't really a part of IOA anyways (it's mainly Hogsmeade and Hogwarts is just the "distant" facade and then part of the FJ queue), and Diagon Alley is already 10000x better than what exists at IOA other than the actual attractions.

Yeah, I can't deny how good Diagon is. Best themed land there is, I just wish it had a good ride lol
