Process in determining park and resort locations??

I was playing around with Google maps looking at the Disney property (always a good escape) and began to wonder why after the Magic Kingdom was built, towards the north end of the property, has the vast majority of expansion since been built in the opposite hemisphere so to speak? Was it just a matter of the best land being there or a grander design plan for the distant future?

Any ideas, guesses, or facts to ease my curiosity?

Here's a question to go along with this post...versus creating another new one. Does somebody (marni, Yoda) have a satellite photo with the entire property that is owned by Disney outlined? I could stare at Live.com all day trying to figure out the borders but I know most of the property is outlined pretty clearly with canals or roads but some parts of the property lay west of the Western Way, east of 535, and south of I-4 and what not...

so an edited picture would be great!

also maybe if you have a picture of all of the land that has been annexed (Flamingo Crossing, 4 Seasons, Celebration...) I could get an idea of how badly Meg and her team is screwing up...

The MK was built on the highest part of the untouched land - and LBV the second highest. The MK also had the buffer of nothing surrounding it, and the dramatic World Drive entrance. The original resorts naturally were close to the MK, and spread around the fancy new lake they dug.

EPCOT Center was so placed since it could tie up World Drive with a new EPCOT Center Drive for easy access, it needed size to be built and to be expanded, and the area was partly unusable due to the sinkhole that helped form World Showcase Lagoon.

Actually, you can see most of what you're asking for in Google Maps.

While looking at the property, switch the view over to Map view (rather than Satellite view). Disney property is in dark grey, compared to the surrounding light grey.

It hasn't been updated to reflect the Four Seasons de-annex (and I'm not 100% sure about where Flamingo Crossing is in relation to Western Way), but it'll give you a very good idea of the property. It's also an easy way to see that little chunk of land that is now the Bonnet Creek resort complex east of the CBR.

And a question for Martin...
If you do as I describe above (and we presume that the dark/light shading is accurate to what is/was Disney property and/or RCID), there are a couple tiny patches of light grey (non-Disney/RCID) on the map... There's a small triangle SW of Coronado Springs on the other side of Western Way. The other is an odd patch that encompasses the main buildings at Saratoga Springs and a couple of the fairways on the adjacent golf course.
Any ideas?

It is sad to know such vast amounts of land has been sold off.

Still hoping someone can shed some light on why there has been such a build-up in the south with a huge empty space across the middle of the property?

Didn't the initial master plan call for the possibility of 7 theme parks??

I do know that they set aside a certain percentage of the land for preservation, I believe as part of the RCID agreement.

i think that part of the land between MK and Epcot is protected for preservation.....
