Price increase for lockers, wheelchair and ECV rentals

After reading that the price was going up to $50 I decided to rent my mother who "has bad knees and is overweight" due to health problems a scooter from Care Medical Equipment for only $30 a day. We were going to call it day by day because some days are better than others but now with the price increase.... BTW my mother would love to be able to walk but it is not possible everyday. We should not judge people without knowing ANYTHING about that persons situation. See everyone in Dec. Let me say Sorry in advance to all those people who will have to wait for us to load on the bus.. Sorry:xmas:

The only place I have ever rented a locker is a water park. We never carry into a park more then we can carry around. We have a backpack and that is where our jackets would be. Anything more than a backpack is too much stuff in the parks.

I feel sorry for people who really need a wheelchair or ECV. I would recommend a person like that to rent from an outside source.

When I saw Steve's post about them putting the prices up, I was glad I had rented from an outside company. I have 2 stress fractures in my left shin and 1 in my right and my left leg in a walking cast. There is no way I can walk around the parks all day long. I knew I would need the ECV for the entire length of stay and for more than just in the parks so I went with an outside company and now I'm really glad that I did.

Sounds like a similar situation to my Dad's. He has advanced RA and has to use his ECV to do anything that involves lots of walking. He's pretty cool about it though -going out of the way not to bother others with it. To look at him (aside from his disfigured joints) you'd think he was just another old fat guy on a scooter. What people don't realize is that he has very limited exercise options and is pretty well 'roided up thanks to his RA meds.

I hope y'all have a great trip in Dec.!

I'm with you, they're just going to have to deal with it. It wasn't my fault that as a healthy adult, I tried a new sport and got injured and now I need an ECV for my trip. They'll just have to wait while I load the bus from DHS and AK. At least I have the monorail for Epcot and MK or the Ferry for MK.

Yes it is very difficult. She has what they call Bakers Cysts in the back of both knees. She was a real tropper last year though and only used a scooter at Epcot but I would rather rent one cheaper from an outside company than pay Disney $20 more a day. Better to be safe than sorry. have a great day!

I don't suppose this info has been publicly released, but do we have any statistics on how many strollers, wheel chairs and motorcarts are rented on an average day in the parks? Perhaps a cast member might know?

Hadn't done the math, but thankfully the Sentinel did if their math is correct, this is outragous.

Walt Disney World this week hiked rental prices for some frequently used items by between 11 percent and 60 percent.

The price of renting a small locker in one of the resort’s four theme parks climbs from $5 per day to $7 per day, up 40 percent. A large locker jumps from $7 to $9, a 29 percent increase.

The price hikes are steeper in Disney’s two water parks. Small lockers rise from $5 to $8, up 60 percent, and large lockers rise from $7 to $10, up 43 percent.

Meanwhile, the cost of renting a wheelchair goes from $10 per day to $12 per day, a 20 percent increase. And the cost of renting one of the resort’s electric scooters goes from $45 per day to $50 per day, an 11 percent increase.

Disney says the refundable deposit charges for wheelchairs and scooters haven’t changed.

It really is amazing how people can look at a person in a wheelchair or scooter and within an instant determine whether or not they actually need one. a persons weight may have nothing to do with their need of assistance. And to think some people actually go to hospitals to get tests done to determine what is wrong with them when they could go to disney, get judged in a millisecond, and save lots of time and money.

I agree.... My mother was not overweight until this knee condition which is brought on my several reason. Like I always say you could very well be in that position one day... Never say never your not dead yet. Not all overweight people are overeaters or lazy slobs that is just what skinny people percieve because they have not been fat YET!:sohappy::eek::brick:

We've never rented a locker before. If I have a sweater I'll tie it on me somehow til needed. On our upcoming trip tho we may need a scooter a couple days. Husband broke his ankle last January and it pains him after hours being on his feet, so looks like I better save up, at least so he can ride particularly the days in Epcot. Thanks for the info.

Like the increase in stroller rentals, Disney may be "tired" of the maintenance and upkeep costs and would rather have people bring/rent their own strollers/scooters...

I don't know, but it's just a thought.

No... wait. What's wrong with raising the prices of ECVs by only $5 dollars?

50 bucks a day by a fleet of 100 (back in 04 thats how many they had) makes for $50,000 dollars/day.

I say make them $75.

There goes that new math again!

50x100=5000

Unless they turn the scooters 10 times a day:shrug:

I wonder if this is turning out to be a bigger PR problem than it is worth. The increase only affects a small number of people, many people who go to the parks never rent a locker wheelchair, or ECV. The local news ran stories with the headline "Disney is raising prices again" the casual observer may not even listen to the whole story. It's only adding to the perception that Disney is getting more and more expensive which might do more harm than the extra profit it generates.

The lockers only went up a couple of bucks and the ECVs are new and people do break them on a regular basis therefore it takes some out of commission. That could be the reason for the slight raise in ECV fees.
