Is a preferred room needed at Coronado and Port Orleans Riverside for a more comfortable experience , we are an active family of mum ,nanny and 15 yr old??

Probably not. There are some rooms anyway that aren't too far to the food court and both resorts have multiple bus stops.

But depends how much you like walking and how able your group is for walking, if you feel the walk to the food court will be too much for you, then a preferred room may be good for you.

At Riverside: Preferred rooms are the three closest Alligator Bayou rooms and most have parking lot or building views. I’d request a regular room in the Mansions and pay for at least a garden view. These put you in a great location where you get to explore the Resort and walk over the island to the main services (not far).
At Coronado, I would just avoid the Ranchos area because they sure are far from the main area. Again I don’t think a preferred room is necessary.

We have never paid extra for a preferred and have always enjoyed our walk to the main areas, at all levels of Disney Resorts.

I'm not sure if classifications have changed but we once had a water view room in one of the mansions and it was only a few minutes walk over to the island for the pool and then onwards to the food court.
I don't think the view matters so much in moderates compared to delexue as you won't really be looking out the window as the walkway is inbetween. But facing the river does mean the room is closer to the main building. But if you want to use the additional bus stops then facing the parking may be OK.

Preferred room is just a closer to the main building/pool locations.
The rooms are not bigger if that's what you're wondering when you say "comfortable".
Its mostly for if you'd like less of a walk but if you're young and active and would rather not pay the extra money that's involved then I'd suggest standard rooms any day.
