Pre-Vacation Rituals/Favorite Things to Do

I know there are probably other topics like this that have been made in the past but I thought it would be cool to see what everyone does in the days leading up to the big departure for the World or enjoys doing on the way to/from the World.

For us, we've flown twice (in 89 and 99) and driven the rest of the time. We find that we rather prefer to drive and take turns driving down and back, instead of going through the hassle at the airport. We are from PA (the York area) and always take the back way down through Gettysburg, hitting Rte 15 south to Fredrick, MD and Rte 29 through Leesburg, VA to Warrenton, VA where we hit I-95 at Fredricksburg, bypassing all the gridlock of the Baltimore/DC Beltway. This always works for us even when we hit points south for other non-WDW trips, plus it's also the scenic route.

Another thing I always enjoy doing is documenting some of the rest stops, restaurants truck stops, and gas stations along the highway on video, when we go down and come back from the World. IMO, I find this just as exciting, especially on the trip down, as it builds up the excitement upon arrival. It's always nice to look back at the different places in which you stop on the trip down and back and decide whether or not you want to hit them on the next trip, plus now, with the magic of Moviemaker and DVD recording, I also include the name of the city/town, state and time of stop on that particular section of video so we know where we were at a given time which can also be helpful when planning the next trip. One of the rest stops I prefer for anyone on here who drives 95 to and from the World is the one in Johnston County, NC (near Kenly/Wilson), about midway through the state. It's one of my favorites and very clean as well. I also enjoy exploring the truck stops along the highway as well.

What's your pre-vacation rituals or your favorite things to do on the way to/from the World?

We have to stop at each state's welcome center/rest stop (driving down 95 from NC). It still cracks me up that the drink machines at the SC welcome center are behind jailhouse bars that you have to reach through. We always stop at 7-11 and Krystal on the way down too, as we don't have them at home.

I go to the Museum of Science & Industry since it has the Epcot-ish feel to the Museum and then come home and get a meal at a bar & grill close to my home before I fly out the next morning...

When taking kids, I always made up little books of laminated daily pages of what we'd do that day, complete with Disney stickers and stuff. It took a lot of time, but was fun to do...and the kids always really like checking their books each night to see what we'd do the next day.

I also got new tennis shoes, but that was less fun.

And gum. Had to make a gum run. They don't sell it at WDW (or the airport) and I've been addicts to gum ever since I quit smoking. :)

My sister and I have a ritual we've been doing for about twelve years now before going to WDW. The day before the trip, we go out and get a mani/pedi. Then, we stay up all night listening to music and watching this:
http://www.amazon.com/Sing-Along-Songs-Disneyland-Fun/dp/B0009X75W4
DISNEYLAND SING ALONG SONGS. I know we're headed to WDW, but we've watched it before *every* trip. It can't be on DVD, either. It has to be on VHS. Then, around 3 or 4 am we take a 2hr/1hr nap. I wake up at 5, shower, we get our bags and head to the airport at 6am. Then we sleep the entire 3 hour flight, and stay up the rest of the day at the Magic Kingdom! And yes, it's always the MK. We get there every trip at just about 2pm. Woo hoo!

Whenever I find out we are thinking about booking another trip to THE MOUSE I always send off for the free vacation planning DVD through Disney's website. It just gets me pumped up and excited to see what is new and to see the old favorites. We drive from New Orleans, counting potty breaks and food, takes about 11 hours. But the drive there is always great with all the anticipation. Since we always go during the Christmas season my wife always subjects me to 11 hours of Christmas music thanks to satellite radio. But since Mickey awaits I do not care in the least.

Even though we can fly out of the Springs, we prefer to fly out of Denver (since that's where the Springs drops off anyway)! We go up the night before, we go out for dinner and have fun in the hotel rooms! Barely sleep of course!

I love making the boys matching tshirts for the trip! They are always different and so cute :) not sure if we'll do it this time though! My oldest will be 9! lol

It starts no matter how long before a trip, but my Disney website intake increases greatly (that's how I found this message board), I listen to Disney World music over and over again, watch Disneyland Fun, watch YouTube videos, and my favorite (probably all my friends' and family's least favorite), non-stop talking about my upcoming trip to WDW. That last one is especially bad when the trip is booked 6months more or advance. Those poor souls.

I like to put Disney movies in my Netflix queue and read trip reports! That and I like planning out my days as far as which park to visit, where to eat, and I obsessively check wait times.
