From the music, to the smell, to the queue, I have to go with Pirates - although I miss the days when you could pick either side & the wait was no longer than 5 minutes).

Pirates is my favorite of the two, but that doesn't mean Haunted Mansion is bad. Though, I do find it interesting how two of the best rides are two of the older ones. I think what makes them good is they aren't trying to ride off the success of a movie (well, movies came later based off the rides, but even then, the rides are still true to how they originally were designed) and I prefer these rides over ones that rely too much on CGI, which can easily look dated.

It is almost like choosing between steak and lobster. You can't go wrong here. I chose Pirates. Granted it is barely higher on the totem pole than Haunted Mansion. Both are themed very well. As mentioned before, I think Pirates at Disneyland is far better because it is longer so over on the other coast Pirates wins hands down. It's a little harder in WDW, but I will say this, the queue in Pirates in WDW is much more immersive. You do feel like you are going through a gateway to another world. Haunted Mansion too of course, but if I had to pick one I pick Pirates.............by the skin of its teeth.

Yes! Exactly. Why are these rides classics and why do we keep coming back to them? Because they are immersive. Disney does this better than anyone else and for whatever reason there are times they forget this. Let's face it, no one has ever been through a Haunted Mansion like at Disney. When we go through one anywhere else there are jump scares and maybe live actors trying to scare us dressed up. That's fine, and it is a fun part of Halloween for me when we do these (or even outside of Halloween) but there is something incredibly immersive about how Disney does it. Just the attention to detail is fascinating and in all honesty the attention to detail is what gives them such great rides.

Pirates too. Yes the movies are popular, but this ride was popular long before the movies came out. Who would have ever come up with this ride in the first place? This could only be Disney. Imagine in, say, 1960 you came up with an idea like this, no one would know what you were talking about and you couldn't explain it very well. That's sort of the point, you have to experience it to understand it.

For me it's Haunted Mansion, the theme, the music, the detail of the dancing ghosts and graveyard scene. I love my POTC but it's all about the mansion for me. It's something that we'll ride 4-5 times a trip and it's always a thrill

HM hands down. The attraction doesn't begin at the doom buggies. But in the foyer. Assuming people's voices are down and you can hear (big assumption I know), the Ghost Host's narration begins there, into the stretching room, and then onto the doom buggy and through the ride. I can't think of better immersion into an attraction than HM.

Do I really have to choose?
These two rides, along with Jungle Cruise and 20K (rip) represent all that is Disney World to me, and take me back to my childhood awe.
The realization that Disney World was a place like no other.
HM amazed and still amazes me with the incredible detail, and real life special effects.
The ballroom (if that's the term) scene...
I remember looking at that, and thinking how did they do that?
Pirates is more fun if you will, and it's definitely the favorite of the two for my twin sons and wife.
So, there's the family experience with that one.
Do I personally prefer one over the other?
I really can't say.

It is close at WDW between the two, mostly because PotC has been going through prolonged schizophrenia with one thing added then taken away then other things added and some of the effects not working all the time. If you opened the vote to the same attractions at DL as well then DL's PotC would win, with a toss up between second place between the HM at DL and WDW, WDW has a better queue but I still enjoy the real elevator at DL... WDW's PotC while great if you've never ridden the original, seems like a poor imitation of the original in comparison... And if they are going to insist on putting Johnny Depp in the ride at the very least go full bore and re-imagine the rest of the pirates as well it doesn't fit will just throwing him in on top of all the other ride pirates.
