My family will be staying at Riverside for the first time in a couple months. What are some of the things that everyone likes to do there.

Any tips on things to do, the best pool or things to do other most other people don't know about will be greatly appreciated.

Campfires, Coach rides ($), the arcade, strolling around at night (very romantic), taking the boat to DtD, I prefer the quiet pools in the evening over the main pool, you also have access to the pool at POFQ, movie night on the lawn in the mansion section, the food court has awesome food, they have a pirates cruise for little kids (costs extra), fishing and boat rentals (also extra).

Has anyone rented a boat? I was wondering if it is allowed to rent a boat, dock it in Downtown Disney while you walk around, then bring it back to the resort. I know that in downtown disney, they have boat rentals as well, so I was wondering if that has ever been done.

Not sure if you can dock there...I think the rates are prohibitive in terms of just parking it and walking around dtd...

According to the Port Orleans site you can, but only between the hours of 10-5:30. You may want to call to confirm that though.

I'm going in June and am torn between POR and the Contemporary. The only thing keeping me from committing to POR is that I've heard horror stories about the bus trip to and from the MK, especially after the fireworks at night. Considering that I have two boys, age 9 and 6, they really want to see the rope-cutting ceremony in the morning and the fireworks. My question to those who may have stayed at POR in June...should I be concerned about this? Or, is it no big deal? I'd really like to save the $$$ and stay at POR, but the convenience of getting to and from the Contemporary to the MK is something I fear compromising. Any words of wisdom?

if that's your only issue go POR and get a bldg. near the main bldg., you will pay a little more for a "preferred room" but far less than Contemp...you will be close enough for food court, gift shop, bar, boatwrights, front desk, arcade, marina, pool AND south bus stop it will take longer than if you were at contemp but its reasonable, we were there xmas week and longest wait for bus after mk fireworks was 30 min and we had some handicap folks that required a little extra time on that bus
if you don't want to pay for preferred room , there are 4 bus stops, try to request bldg. near one. To me 14 is best bldg....don't get me wrong, contemp is superior resort but its so much more money

Were you WAITING at the MK bus stop for 30 mins., or was that the TOTAL time (waiting, riding)? Also, the "preferred rooms" are all booked for the week we're planning on going. The wife would like a "Royal" room if we do stay at POR. Are those ONLY in the Mansion Buildings? Looking at the map, it seems the Magnolia Building would be best? I hear the Oak is going to be experiencing some construction at the time. Seems like you're "in the know" when it comes to POR. Any additional guidance is appreciated Marijil!

We waited a good 20 minutes after fireworks on December 28...one of the busiest nights of the year...it was cool though because we weren't just standing...we were moving up as they had bus after bus after bus coming, which was good...royal rooms are in mansion bldgs only we have 5 in our family so we only stay at Alligator Bayou, I don't really know much about mansion rooms, you should check out portorleans.org, lots of info there

The "best" pool is probably the main one, if you have kids.

They have a really good food court.

I'm not the biggest Yee-Haw Bob fan, but if you have kids, they might really enjoy that. And everything is worth checking out once, some people love him!

Renting a boat is nice, if you have the time and aren't all go-go-go with theme parks (which most people, understandably, are.)

I think it depends on what time of year you go. We went in May and there were no problems with the buses, but the parks were not crowded at all. I

You don't have to leave immediately after the fireworks. That's when everyone leaves the park. Yes, the buses will be packed at that time. Hang back in the park for a while. The buses will come and the lines will dwindle. You may even see the Kiss Goodnight. It's a lovely time to be in the park. If you do rope drop and take a rest in the afternoon your kids should be good to go.

Contemporary-
1. Walk into MK
2. Monorail to and from MK and EPCOT
3. Electric Water Pageant
vs.
Port Orleans Riverside
1. Save $2500
2. Bus to and from MK and EPCOT

I stayed in a Royal Room last January. We were in Oak Manor and there was a bus stop behind our building. Quick walk across the parking lot. The buses can be crowded but nothing extraordinary.

Perhaps if I SAVE the $2500, I'll GET the "Kiss Goodnight" from the misses!:geek:

We never had to wait going early in the mornings. The only long waits were when we left right after a parade or fireworks. We did have to stand many times. We were in the mansions and it was a nice, peaceful walk to the main pool, lobby or boat ramp. Make sure and ask the first bus driver where they are starting pick-ups. They were not picking up South depot first when we were there June 2012. We actually walked over there because everyone said that was the first stop and we didn't want to stand, but when the bus got there, it was full. I asked the driver trainer, and she told us that would be the last stop, not the first.

Of all the resorts wdw resorts we've stayed at (cbr, por,cs, akl, wl), the POR buses were the worst we've experienced. May have been a fluke (it was sept) but it was pretty awful. Not to mention we had room issues and staff issues. POR is generally highly regarded around here but we much preferred CS. We'll try it again sometime but contemporary would be my next choice!
