Port Orleans - Riverside or French Quarter?

Hi folks,
We're planning the summer trip now, and trying to decide on a moderate.

The kids suggested Coronado Springs, which we've stayed at before, but I'm considering Port Orleans as they've never been there (the wife and I did for an anniversary weekend some time ago at Dixie Landings when it was called that).

Lots of folks on these boards seem to really like P.O., so the question is....Riverside or French Quarter. I'm assuming there's no diffference in the rooms, and other than the Magnolia buildings I believe its all outside entrances. What makes one better (or worse) than the other? Pools, food courts/restaurants, game rooms, bus loop?

I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks. Gary

As you can see there are a lot of personal preferences here as to PO -Riverside or French Quarter. Have stayed at POR 6 times since 2002 and this resort is our personal favorite. We like the Magnolia Bend section as well as Alligator Bayou. We also have NEVER had a bus issue. Yes, the bus stops first at POFQ. Does it mean you lose time in the park? No. Disney knows where it needs buses. As far as walking distances around the resort, you will not do NEARLY as much walking around the resort as you will do in the parks. The food court is large at POR but the food court at French Quarter also gets rave reviews. Either resort is absolutely beautiful and you have use of the services at either. Why not try one and on your next trip try the other? Whatever you and your family decide, I know your trip will be awesome!

i also like the po riverside bc of the piano player. I am prob. the only 17 year old who actually enjoys to sit down with a shirly temple and listen to the piano player at hotels, department stores, exc. Also they have a great selection of nonalcholic drinks, especially the sour one.

Thanks everyone. Based on all the replies, it appears to be overwellmingly.....even. I guess the only bad choice is to not stay there. We'll probably have to toss a coin to decide.

I vote for Riverside! I stayed at Riverside last October and since then it is my favorite resort. One of the nights we walked over to FQ for dinner and for a swim. I have to say, there is a better food selection at the food court at Riverside and I like the pool better at Riverside. It may have just been the day we were there but there was lots of sand in the bottom of the FQ pool and my DD leven liked to slide at the Riverside Pool better. We will be returning to Riverside this year.

I just booked at POFQ for my wife and me, and hopefully it will be a blast. We usually stay at either the Beach/Yacht Club, the Wilderness Lodge, or the Grand Floridian. This year we dicided to cut back a little bit.

We picked FQ for our next trip because it was smaller. We will have a 4 kids under 5 with us along with my parents so we thought it would be better if there were less walking. We also picked it because when they share busses FQ is the 1st stop so in the mornings we should get a seat and at night if we need to stand at least we'd get off 1st.

I vote for POFQ. I have stayed at both, and I loved the riverside, it's just... BIG. You are going to spend all day walking around the parks....do you really want a long hike back to your room at night?

We have stayed at both, and there is little difference in the rooms. French Quarter is more compact, is first on the bus route and the pool (and slide) are great. The grounds of French Quarter are more attractive than Riverside.

Next trip: May 20-27. POFQ:p

Fq

We had a similiar dilemna when choosing between the two but we went with FQ and enjoyed it very much as it is smaller then riverside which means hotels are closer to the bus stop, pool and food court. Riverside obviously is much larger but does have a bigger food court. We walked over to Riverside a couple of times for the pool and food court but were really happy with our decision to stay at FQ

Is there a difference between the alligator bayou rooms and the magnolia rooms? They both have outside entrances right (meaning you don't enter the room from an enclosed hallway)?

Yes, there is a difference. They both have outside entrances, but the rooms differ a bit on the inside. I've stayed in both Alligator Bayou and Magnolia Bend and the Alligator Bayou had more of "rustic" feel, i.e. the bed posts looked like tree barks, etc. Magnolia Bend, however is styled like a plantation mansion. The rooms are very similar in how they are set up and in size, though. You can see pictures of both styles of rooms (at allears.net) here: http://allears.net/acc/g_dxl.htm
