:veryconfu Anyone know the reason they changed all of DIXIE Landings over to Port Orleans Riverside. Seems kind of silly , and a huge waste of money.

My understanding of why the Resorts merged were

1 that it saves money- only one restaurant – one General Manager – one hotel check in
2 guest confused the resorts(rumor)
3 someone told me the Dixie refers to much to the south (bad PR)
If you can dream it - you can do it

The main reason was because the name Dixie Landings was not PC (politicaly correct) in todays word. (Hey, I had no problem with the name.) Go figure.

By the way there have been tons of threads about this subject.:hammer:

:sohappy: Long Live DIXIE LANDINGS !!!:sohappy:

A little of all three. But, the PC thing was quite strong. Not only did the "Dixie" name go away. But also the "Mason" and "Dixon" bus platform names were dropped as well as the "Colonel's Cotton Mill." Just about any an all references to anything that could be construed to cotton plantations was eliminated.

and what is next?? Are we gonna remove Splash Mountain too? This is a historical reference folks, not necessarily how we wants things to be in the world going foward!!! Personally I preferred the name Dixie Landings to P.O. Riverside. It seperated the two resorts for me. Now it just seem to get more confusing when I am speaking about the two resorts!!! I am going there in 14 days and I can hardly wait!!!! See you soon Dixie Landings!

The REAL reason was NOT political correctness.

It's all about MONEY.

** Two general managers were reduced to one.

** Two independent hotel staffs (housekeeping, maintenence, bookkeeping, etc.) were consolodated to one larger, streamlined unit.

** All printed materials (check-in materials, maps, logo souvenirs, etc.) could be mass-produced for the COMBO resort as opposed to two different resorts

** During low occupancy seasons, parts of the COMBO resort can be closed (saving money) while not affecting the overall guest experience (i.e. the post-9/11 closure of the French Quarter). Without the union, Disney would have to keep staff on-hand at BOTH hotels. (The other option would have been to transfer guest reservations to the other "hotel". While TECHNICALLY it's the same thing, Disney avoided complaints since the guests were indeed "booked" in the same Port Orleans complex.)

This topic has been discussed a lot, so I want to clarrify for the last time...

1) The biggest reason WAS FOR political correctness, it really had nothing to do with money.

2) The resorts actually operate just like they did before the merge. The resorts shared all things then just like they do now. There is not one general manager at the resorts, because there are just too many rooms and guests that way for one person to handle. The baggage service, food court, gift shop, and all other resort employess are handled the way they were in the PO/DL days.

3) They wanted an overall theme to complement the sister resorts. Now it has the true Louisiana theme.

4) Easier for people not familiar with the resort. They can now ask someone to go to the Riverside section from the French Quarter section if need be without making the person think they are going to a completely different resort.

So the money issue was really not the factor in this case. It had nothing to do (mainly) in the name change.
