I have just read that the PortOrleans Riverside buildings MAY have started a refurb. Can anybody confirm this? How long does a refurb take and what do they do to the rooms? We are going in November and do you think they will be finished by then? Can we request a refurb room when we check it? Thanks for any infp

I hadn't heard of anything, but I know that POR just did a major refurb of all of the Guest rooms back in '04. I'd think that rehabbing the rooms would be on a longer cycle than that.

Even when they were doing it, they would only close one or two Bayou buildings (or parts of one Mansion) at a time. The work was very unobtrusive.

Of course, if they're going to be doing some kind of *exterior* refurb, that might be a bit more visible. (But again, they'd close whichever building(s) that are affected)

Really? We were there in a mansion room in July and our room looked BEAT. Having stayed there many times I thought the room was the worst I have seen. It was so worn looking. The furniture was all chipped and damaged (especially the legs), the carpet was faded and worn in spots, and in general the room just didn't look good. I was hoping for a refurb soon.

I had family in town that stayed at POR last week and they complained that their room was musty and had some damp spots in the carpet.

They absolutely need a refurb of the Magnolia Bend section. The past 2 years we stayed there, the rooms were so shabby and smelly that we actually decided to upgrade and do Boardwalk this year. It was getting pretty bad.

Since I changed from the POP to the POR, I found a link on one of these forums for the unoffical website for POR and POFQ www.portorleans.org and it said the beginning of Sept they are starting with the Magnolia Bend building. They same company that did the refurb back in 04 is also doing the refurb this time around and normally do 60 rooms a week. I thought I would ask around more to see if any truth to this:) Crossing my fingers to luck out for a brand new refurb room in Nov!:sohappy:

Hmmm... Maybe the '04 refurb was only of the Aligator Bayou buildings. At that time you could tell which rooms had been done and which hadn't from the outside because the room number plaque was a different design.

There's also been the talk of the Haunted Mansion and Princess themed rooms in another thread, one theme going into POR and the other going into POFQ. This may include work for those.

We have stayed at POR many times and always love it. I do have to say though on our last trip, our room had a musty smell too. We were in Alligator Bayou (I think building 18). The room looked fine, it looked clean but it had that smell. I think it was the air conditioner but not 100% sure.

A musty smell in Alligator Bayou is considered immersive theming.:D

We were there just last week and requested Magnolia Terrace, we were told that entire building was closed for a refurb so perhaps they are going one building at a time.

Hmm...this is interesting info. We arrive on the 8th of October so I'll be interested to what's going on. I was originally going to request Magnolia Bend but I think I'll just see what happens. :D

According to the Unofficial Port Orleans Site, it's only Parterre Place at POR that is getting refurbed. It's POFQ that is getting entirely refurbed.

From the Unofficial Port Orleans Site...

Back in March 2010, Disney filed work permit paperwork with the Orange County Comptroller’s offices for “guest room renovation” work to be undertaken at Port Orleans French Quarter by Friedrich Watkins Company of Orlando, FL — the same company which did the last series of Port Orleans room refurbs in 2004. This new work permit referred only to Building 7, and stated that the work must commence sometime before mid-March 2011.

More work permits were filed in June 2010 for room renovations to Port Orleans Riverside buildings 24 and 95 (Parterre Place) with commencement dates sometime before June 2011. Most recently, in July 2010, more permit paperwork was filed to cover all of the remaining sections of Port Orleans French Quarter (buildings 1 to 6), also with a requirement to commence work by March 2011.

There is still no official word from Disney as to any start dates, but the nearby DVC resort of Old Key West is currently in the process of having all of its rooms updated (based on permits issued at the start of April) so hopefully Port Orleans won’t be far behind. Cast Members at the resort are remaining predictably tight-lipped on the subject, however at the start of August it was unofficially confirmed to a guest by two managers that the rehab of French Quarter building 7 would start in October 2010.

The last series of room refurbishments (2004/05) progressed at a rate of approximately 64 rooms per week and were carried out by the same company without requiring major closures or impacting on guest experience. Keep your eyes on our News section for the latest updates.
