Here is a map of the resort to give you an idea of where everything is:

As you can see there are several Bayou areas that are close to the main building highlighted in blue. All rooms have queen beds... well except the king bed ones.

The preferred rooms do have a nice location. When looking for a bus, note that typically the West Depot gets picked up first for MK and the South Depot gets picked up first for everywhere else (although they do sporadically change this).

All rooms have queen sized beds now.
Really? My stays in Alligator Bayou and the Princess rooms were in January 2014 and November 2013, respectively, and they both had doubles post-refurbishment. I know that one of the objectives of the refurbishment was to add larger beds, but they reused the original headboads in Alligator Bayou so they remained doubles (though they also have the fold-down smaller-than-twin Murphy bed in those rooms). I'm not sure why the all-new princess rooms didn't get the upgrade though

Literally everything I have read up until your comment suggests all rooms have queens or a king.

We loved the Bayou rooms. We requested the non-preferred building closest to the main bus depot (South Depot), and got one next to it -- about a 3-minute walk to the depot and 5 minutes to the Food Court. We loved the decor (it was freshly renovated when we visited) and preferred it to the Mansions, but it's all a matter of personal taste.

(The standard rooms everywhere in the resort all have queen-sized beds. The rooms in Alligator Bayou have a child-sized Murphy bed in addition to the 2 queen beds.)

Speaking from A LOT of experience, (but not from the new upgraded Princess Suites angle, since we have no little ones in our group) Yes, the best rooms to stay in are in Alligator Bayou, and in the map provided by Acishere shows, they have the least amount of distance to get to main building/food court/biggest bus depot. Speaking of bus depots, though, there are 3 others on the property, and depending on what time of year you go, along with what time of day/night, sometimes the routes are shared with POFQ, and honestly, don't exactly go in the order you would think.
For StarBurst, and anyone else, to begin with...it's a great food court with many options, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus there's the option for room delivery pizza. The on-site restaurant Boatwright's Dining Hall, is dinner only, but the biggest draw, usually Thursdays-Saturdays, is "YeHaa Bob" an awesome, and VERY fun and family orientated piano player and entertainer at the main building's bar, and I'm not gonna lie, even more fun with adult beverages!! (Speaking of those, the main pool has a great outside bar as well!) There's horse-drawn carriage rides, that take you through the resort, which is stunning at night, catch-and-release fishing in the surrounding river, and probably something else I forgot!
As far as bus travel times go, Epcot's the closet, Animal Kingdom is a loooonnng ride. Hope this helps, for anybody and everybody out there, and not only do I not play a travel agent on T.V....I'm not one in real life, either.

staying for 1st time at POR in sept. so im following along...:)

Ditto (in August, King bed reserved). I'm confused how they decide where they may put us... Are preferred/pool/garden/river view rooms all possible to a King reservation? Trying to scope out a nice quiet spot with nice view that's not too far from buses/main bldg.
