I am planning a trip in late september. Hopefully getting free dining but anyway. The only value that temps me is the Pop. I was considering upgradig the dining plan to the regular dp. I really don't want to stay at the pors or pofq as i'm from new orleans and can visit that anytime. Even though i know those are favorites.

My husband is a total wilderness lodge kinda guy, and he's never been to disney! I know with free dining here we would have ts meals that we could bring our dd to (just made 3)

I have never been to either. What are your suggestions/expiriences. And if a discount comes out for rooms at wilderness, should we just take the discount and pay oop for meals? Confused and reay to plan my first disney family trip. All suggestions welcomed

Do you have a budget in mind? Even with any discount that may come out, it is a pretty big jump from Pop to WL. Also consider how much time you plan to spend at the resort (i.e., is it just a place to sleep and shower? or do you plan to go back for a break, swim at the pool, relax, etc...) They are both great resorts!

Pop rooms are too small for 2 people let alone 3. Wilderness has bigger rooms, queen size beds, 2 great on site sit down restaurants better amenities and boat access to magic kingdom, contemporary resort and Fort wilderness plus shuttle bus and walking path to Fort wilderness as well. Unless you're only in your hotel to sleep shower and shh...ower some more (what did you think I was going to write) no contest.

We chose the Pop for our upcoming trip in June. Money was a factor for us, but Pop is supposed to be the nicest of the value resorts from everything I have read. Since this is our first trip to WDW as a couple, we have park tickets for every day of our stay (wanted to make sure we had plenty of time to experience everything), so we probably won't be spending much time at the hotel anyway. I figure I'd rather have the money we would have spent on a nicer room for souvenirs, alcohol, etc.

Honestly, we opted to not do the dining plan, but our situation is a little different from yours. DH and I have both had weight loss surgery. While he can now eat about as much as anyone else, I cannot... in fact, a kid's meal from most fast food restaurants is too much food for me, just for a point of reference. So we would be wasting money if we did much in the way of ts, unless we split the meals... in which case we would still be wasting money on the dining plan, since those are per person.

If you take money out of the equation it's a no brainer. WL is far superior in pretty much every aspect I can think of (including unfortunately the price:(). If you can afford it WL would be my vote. If budget is a concern then Pop is pretty nice and superior to the all stars IMHO. I know you said Port Orleans is out for you, but Coronado Springs is a really nice moderate if you are looking for middle ground.

I have seen up to 30% discounts offered this year for deluxe resorts so you probably have to do the math and see if the free DDP is worth more than the discount offered when you are booking. It takes a little time to do, but if you map out where you want to eat and crunch the numbers you can see if for you DDP is really worth what they charge for. If you plan on doing a lot of character meals or tend to order more expensive items at sit down restaurants it can come out as a gain. If you sometimes just might want a salad and/or an appetizer then it can be less of a value.

Another option to consider is renting DVC points at Wilderness Lodge from an owner or through a rental site. You can usually save a bunch of money over rack rates, but you wouldn't be eligible for free DDP. A week at WLV is 107 points in a studio. If you rent from one of the reputable sites at $14 per point you would be paying $1,498 for the room for the week ($214 per night). Rack rate at WL is $361 per night for the same time. Renting a DVC villa would save you about 40% off rack rates. Rack rates for rooms at Pop Century are around $130 a night for the same time.

When you start to look at DDP it gets a little more complicated. To buy DDP for a week for 2 adults and a child is $973 or $139 per day. If you rented DVC points for $214 a night and bought DDP for $139 a day you would be pretty much right at the same cost as paying rack with free dining. If you think you would spend less than $973 for meals then it may be worth just paying out of pocket for meals and renting DVC points.

Just to compare, a room at Coronado Springs rack rate is $210 a night. If you got free dining it would cost you $1,470 for a week. Compared to $2,527 at Wilderness Lodge with free dining. Pop would run $910 plus the up charge to go from quick service to regular dining plan (last year's price for 2 adults and 1 child would have been $37 a night or $259 total). With the upgrade it's $1,169 for Pop.

For me it's well worth the extra $300 to go from a value to a moderate. Size alone is a huge advantage. There are almost 3,000 rooms at Pop vs a little under 2,000 at Coronado Springs vs about 900 at Wilderness Lodge. The bus service is impacted by the number of rooms. The moderates have better dining options, slightly larger rooms and nicer resort amenities. The main pool at Coronado Springs has a pretty cool water slide.

The bump up to a deluxe is a little more steep. The huge advantage of Wilderness Lodge is that you can take a boat to either MK directly or to CR where you can catch the monorail to either MK or EPCOT. With a 3 year old you are likely spending a lot of time at MK. It's great to not have to take the bus there. You also have good dining options nearby. Whispering Canyon right at WL and Chef Mickeys at CR are great (especially for kids). You also have Mickeys Backyard BBQ nearby at Fort Wilderness and Ohana at the Poly is very popular. The rooms at Wilderness Lodge are also nicer and bigger. With a 3 year old taking naps or at least having rest time you will probably spend a little more time in the room than some people do. The extra space could be nice and you would have a balcony to escape to if the little one is asleep. On our last trip we stayed at Bay Lake Tower and enjoyed a few adult beverages each night on the balcony after the kids went to bed. It was a nice way to unwind. It probably comes down whether you think the advantages are worth the extra cost.

If money isn't an option for us, we would choose WL hands down over Pop. WL is just home to us. We have stayed at both Pop and WL and the ambience of WL is a million times better than Pop, though Pop really makes you feel like you're at Disney with all the larger than life icons they have at the resort. WL is also much more peaceful than the values. Even though it is just a short boat ride from MK, it feels like you are completely secluded, which is nice after a long day at the parks.

WL is a hotel.... you walk out your door and access the lobby from inside. There is no walking outside for a quick trip to the hotel store or the restaurants.....TS and QS. A short walk from the lobby is the bus service to the parks and boat service to the MK or the Contemporary Resort where you can access the monorail to the MK or other monorail resort restaurants. The atmosphere is the WL is just great.... go on youtube and take a tour. You will love it! The pool is nothing to write how about but it is refreshing on a hot summer day....and it is very hot in September. You can request a room with 2 queens or a queen and bunks....not sure how old your daughter is. I believe that Pop has full beds, not queen and the rooms are bigger at WL. I would chose the WL for so many reason.... have a great time planning! :cat:

I agree with tink397. I like the feel of a hotel, i.e. walking into your room from the inside. It just FEELS more luxurious to me. I was torn between Pop Century, POFQ, and Wilderness. After receiving the Summer Specials, the cost of POFQ and Wilderness were basically identical and the Pop ended up being only a few hundred dollars less. What sold me in the end were a couple of factors.
1. The feel of a being in a "hotel" as opposed to motel.
2. The convenience of getting to and from the MK quickly.
3. Access to the monorail to get to EPCOT. (It just wouldn't seem like a Disney vacation to my kids and I if we weren't able to ride the monorail.)
These were the determining factors for me. Hope this helps.

My daughter is 3 years old and still needs her midday nap. So we will be spending a bit of time at the resort. Plus we decided to take a break from the parks on day 3 of 7 so dd can relax, swim, and maybe go to Dtd late that afternoon. Just to slow down and enjoy the magic of disney outside of the parks

. I accidently showed dh the WL photos online and i think he caught on to the disney bug! His eyes lit up and he said "oh, that. Looks cool! We can stay there?" Which my husband was anti disney before.

I like the pop as its the 'nicer value' close to AoA, which dd would love to see, and by saving the extra money we would be able to do an extra character meal or two for dd. (i have been to disney 3 times. All before i met dh. Only stayed on property on once. Stayed at the ASMovies for a week and a half and i enjoyed myself a lot. I like the oversised over the top magic of the allstars. But i dont know if dh would enjoy it as much. Dd would. :)

The only must do's i have dining wise are ohana supper (family highly recomended it), hoop de doo (on my bucket list), princesses breakfast in norway, and chef mickey breakfast.

Thanks for your imput! I love to hear the pro 's and cons of each especially from those who have been there!

We LOVE the Wilderness Lodge. We stayed there as a family of four in a bunk bed room two trips ago and we would love to stay there again. We visited it on our last trip and realized it's our "home" resort. We have a trip planned for DH and myself for October and we were planning to stay at Pop, but we've decided we wanted something nicer. We're currently booked for Caribbean Beach Resort, but we're watching the discounts to see if one comes out that would put WL more in line with what we're willing to spend.

If money isn't a big consideration I'd stay at WL. We loved being able to take the boat to MK and it was very easy to come back from there for a mid day nap.

Good luck with your decision!

Pop rooms are too small for 2 people let alone 3.

???? The Pop room was plenty large enough for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 tweens). Would a Deluxe be more spacious? Of course, but Pop was just fine for us to sleep and shower comfortably as you mentioned.

To the OP, there are mods besides POR and POFQ if you don't want to make that big monetary jump from Value to Deluxe. CBR has a lovely Caribbean beach feel to it. Btw, I'm looking forward to visiting your fair home town in 2015.

Those are my two favorite resorts, and in fact am heading for another stay at Pop next month. The room size at Pop is fine, don't worry about that if you choose to stay there. Plus a good food court, nice/fun themeing, and pools. Wilderness Lodge is spectacular (but of course much more expensive). We have stayed there for special occasions, honeymoon, anniversary, etc. Great themeing, nice pool, quick service and sit down restaurants, and just a wonderful place to stay. If you can afford it with no worries pick that one, but either choice you won't be disappointed. Have fun!

When it comes to room size, I was offering what I colorfully refer to as "my opinion." My freshman year dorm room was slightly bigger than the Value rooms and I thought they were kinda cramped with just one roommate, let alone 3 like my family would be. I could maybe deal with one for a night (like, if we arrive a day earlier than our planned check in day or opt to stay one night later), but for a whole trip, I wouldn't enjoy it at all. Not for the least of which, both my wife and I are not petite (nor are we grotesqueries, mind you) and we both get very hot when we sleep and need some space, space we just won't get if we were to share a double bed; we'd each have to share a bed with one of our kids were we to stay in a Value...

which brings me to the Caribbean. Aside from the fact that I'm not all that crazy about the theme and I've only ever heard bad things about the sit-down restaurant Shutters, the beds are the same size as the Values. CBR is the only moderate resort to not offer 2 queen sized beds in the room (except for all the mod rooms that only have one king sized of course but that's irrelevant for a party bigger than 2). No way I'm paying that kind of money for a vacation room and getting a bed so small either I can't share it with my wife or we have to pay o top of each other, which wouldn't be all that awful (wink wink) were it not for kids being present and the fact that you gotta go to sleep at some point and we'd wake up stuck to each other like your bare legs on a leather couch in summertime.

You were lucky your freshman year of college - my dorm room was significantly smaller for me and one roommate! And she turned out to be a kleptomaniac (I'm not kidding).

Wilderness Lodge is a deluxe resort with a boat "ride" over to the Magic Kingdom . WL also has indoor corridors.
Pop is a value. There is no table service restaurant with bus transportation only. POP to me feels more like a motel ( like all of the values). We had a nice stay at the POP. It all depends on your taste and expectations at a resort.;)

I agree that the difference to go from a value to moderate is great and well worth it. I will do moderate each trip because what you get for the money is great!

The difference in price from a value/moderate to deluxe is insane! I will never get to stay at a deluxe without a pretty nice room discount because those prices are outrageous! I must say that WL is a nice resort though.. my parents just stayed there for 4 nights and the money it cost them to stay for 4 nights, park hoppers and quick service dining was more than what I payed for a whole week at POFQ on the dining plan. It is so expensive to stay at a deluxe. It is completely up to each person and what they are willing to pay. I would go moderate.
