Pop Century Probably Won't Ever Be Finished...

Common sense says so. Why would they build the other half of the complex when they can't even fill the rooms that they have now? They delayed the opening of the finished half already for the same reason, so why would they build more rooms? Also, has anyone actually seen the pictures of the unfinished buildings or actually thought about the concept behind them? The 30s and 40s weren't exactly "fun". I don't really think that they should be built. What do you think?

They already have a few buildings up on the other side, including the Main Check in/Food Court.

They have to finish the other side for a number of reasons

Well... hrmm... I'd tend to disagree. Late June and Early July we were at 99.9% occupancy property wide. My guess is that once Pop Century opens phase I, they will close down first Sports, and then Music for the rehabs they need.

Once the tourism industry makes a comeback, those rooms will be booked solid, I guarantee it. Disney's never had any problems selling the value resorts, even in the dead of winter.

Also add in to the mix the BIG new attractions that are coming online 2005 and 2006 and onwards. If everything goes to plan, its an exciting time for the mouse over the next few years, and they are going to need rooms to put those happy guests! :)

Invero summed it up nicely.

Value resorts will always do well because a lot of people like to take the cheapest option and people would rather stay at a cheap Disney hotel than a cheap hptel on I-Drive.

Where have you got the facts that they can't fill rooms now? By all accounts all the Disney resorts are doing well!

My local news (WFTV) did a spot on PC awhile ago. They said alot of fluff, but they did get good shots of the resort. They also explained, that in the main building, there will be a shop called "Shopping Pop", which will have, like, the old tin toys, 1950's retro potato head's, all of that, made to look retro/50ish.

I have to pass it almost all the time, and, when im coming back from club hopping or something, and its late, the light displays on the buildings are great, but no one ever gets to see em. Opening date is December, it will open then. It will be finished also.

I havent seen concepts of the 30/40's building(s), but they cant be that bad. The best one I have seen so far is the "Boogie Shoes" one (70's?)...Big afro's, platform shoes, and bellbottoms...fun!

I don't think those years will be bad...for the 1920s, we have Steamboat Willie, for the 30s, Snow White, for the 40s, war cartoons w/ Donald in...what...the Navy? 1910, I don't know, but the 1900s ought to be a tribute to Walt...I think these years will actually be the most interesting, because very few of us can actually remember them--it'll be a kewl learning experience.

They were rough times, but don't believe for a second that people went 20 years with no fun ;) I've heard too many wild stories from my grandparents and patients.

Well, I guess I stand corrected. I thought that the main reason that they delayed it was because they knew that they couldn't fill the rooms. I also didn't know that almost all of the rooms on property were filled. When did this turnaround happen? I thought that we were still going through rough times? Also, does anyone know what time to expect them to finish the other side? It seems like it would be bad show to have the half finished buildings in plain view of the guests...

Just think of "The Little Rascals" ("Our Gang") and "The Three
Stooges." These were all made during the late '20s and '30s.

The times may have been poor, but people had a lot of fun, and maybe in some ways more meaningfully than when we have all the modern creature comforts! After, all "It's a Wonderful Life" was made in 1939, with that very theme.

Not to mention "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) for fanciful thinking at the time. And, of course, the biggest, most expensive and lavish Hollywood film of all time (adjusted for inflation) until "Titanic" was "Gone With the Wind," also released in 1939.

Maybe hardship pushed the envelope and made people really relish things and celebrate or use what they had.

The 30s

Films in the 30s were all about escapism. Times were tough. But Hollywood could take you anywhere for just a little money. There wasn't TV, so you went to the movies for news reals, for serial shorts and for some of the best musicals ever created.
