Poof! All Gone.

To quote an old saying -

"It's all done with mirrors"

There is only half a butterfly in there, up against a mirror. On one side you see the butterfly reflected in the mirror, on the other side just the empty half of the cage reflected against a mirror.

I, too, always wondered this, but if you look closely, I believe as you come upon the butterfly, you're seeing only half, reflected in a mirror, and when you curve around, you see the back of the mirror, equalling: Voila! Magic disappearing butterfly!

Think of it this way. Split the cage in 2 section and devide it with a mirror that reflects on both sides. One side has just half a swing on it but looks complete due to the reflection in the mirror. The other side has half a butterfly on it but it looks like a full one because of the reflection.

As you pass the cage, you go from one side of the cage to the other. The edge of the mirror his hidden by one of the bars on the cage. If you look closely at the swing, you can see where it is split in the middle.

A similar trick is used by many illusionists (magicians) as well.
