Poncho uses?

OK -I'll admit it, I'm a wimp. On our last Disney visit we got caught in a downpour, and I finally gave in and, sadly yes, I bought a yellow poncho. Aside from the obvious question of what do you do with it after it stops raining and you have this soaking wet piece of plastic to carry with you for the rest of the day, what do you do with it once you bring it home?

In last Dec my wife and mother in law bought them. They are sitting in her basement waiting for our next trip in Dec.

We just bring them every year in the backpack that we carry. They are very light and its worht bringing them and resusing them in stead of buying new ones every time.

I enjoy dodging the rain as opposed to wearing the ponchos. They get so hot and sticky. I much rather get soaked and then freeze in the air conditioned attractions...

As beachclub has said, I reuse it back home. It's light, fits in any bag easily, and you'll be thankful in cases when you're caught in a downpour. Plus, some people noticed it and you'll get a smile or two.

In any case, do they even sell the yellow ponchos anymore? I think they started using the clear ones a couple of years go. I did buy those, but I still use the yellow 100 Years of Magic poncho that I bought years ago. People often ask where to buy those when they notice it. :)

I believe all they sell is the clear ones, we have so many of the yellow ones its insane, but after awhile you get tired of bringing them everytrip..which is where the disposible ones come in handy.

Also they are good to help pack breakables on your trip home

We did the poncho route for our first trips to the world... but then we got tired of lugging the wet poncho around in our packs all day after the rain stops. not to mention that lovely wet-plastic smell they have. :hurl:

So now we stock up on the dollar store umbrellas. they're still cheap, but you can just fold them up and put them away without having the mess of a poncho.

But to each their own, i guess :)

After the rain, I will ask for a bag from any of the merchandise locations and put it in there. Then i just make sure it won't leak from the bag and then I will put it in my backpack. I reuse the ponchos as well from year to year. No reason not to.

We have always used them again and again. Last year we took a January trip and surprisingly, it was warm during the day but sometimes cold at night. Not wanting to return to the hotel for warmer clothing, we used the ponchos to keep us warm. So see, if you're stuck out, they can serve a double purpose.

I can't believe I thought it was yellow - I just checked it out to be sure. Sorry about that - guess I just remember seeing seas of yellow ponchos exiting the parks in the past and just assumed that's what I had.

The styles of the WDW ponchos seem to change from year to year. The ones we bought about 10 years ago, which we are still recycling, are now "vintage" one-of-a-kind ponchos when it rains in the parks. Also makes it easier for us to pick each other out of a crowd of wet plastic hoods!

I keep ours and take them on the next trip, while we are in the parks we shake them off, turn them inside out, fold them up and ram them to the bottom of the rucksack!

We always forget to bring them back on following trips, but we've only had to buy them twice. When the rain stops, I also get a bag to put them in and then I hang them to dry for the next day when we get back to our room. One nice thing about buying Disney ponchos is that if it tears you might get a free replacement. Mine had a small tear on the seam by my neck and when I went to buy another one and asked if she would take my torn one, the CM didn't charge me for a new one.

More ways to use your ponchos: If you forget to bring plastic baggies for your wallet, cameras, etc. and you want to ride Kali River Rapids, put all of them into your bag and use your ponchos to wrap your bag. Even the plastic tarp they put over the bag storage area in the middle of the raft sometime doesn't protect the bag from getting wet.

However, you should never use the poncho on yourself when riding Kali River Rapids because the Gods will be mad at you! :)

What to do with the wet ponchos? The plastic bag route is recommended. However, here's what you can do, and it comes with a useful hint too. What I usually have with me in my bag whenever I got to any of the parks is a large beach towel (in fact, it's a Disney Animal Kingdom beach towel). So you can easily wrap your wet poncho inside the towel. But the beach towel also performs other functions. On a very hot, sweltering summer day, and you want to sit down on the curb or walkway to watch a parade, it makes a nice insulating pad for you and your companion's tush against the hot pavement. It also defines your "boundary" that other people usually (but not all the time) don't invade. This can become useful when staking your location while waiting for Illuminations.

We take ours with us every trip. We fold them and pack them into two jumbo zip-lock bags and throw them into one of our backpacks. After it's stopped raining, we shake them dry and then fold them back up and back into the back packs they go. When we get back to our resort we'll take them out and hang them up to make sure they dry completely.

My dad bought a bright orange poncho in MK in 2002. It's the only time I've ever seen them selling orange ones. Mostly though we have old yellow ones.
