When you check in into the Poly ask if you can upgrade.
Sometimes they may offer the upgrade but not the one you may want.

So just ask when you check in. :animwink:

Have fun! :D

You can check in no matter what time you arrive so don't let the 3 pm thing throw you. You can ask about a room upgrade when you check in, but they are not free so expect to be charged if you do receive one.

The earlier you check in, the better your chances of receiving a FREE upgrade, since everyone who checked in ahead of you also asked for a free upgrade. Be specific - don't just ask for an upgrade - politely ask if they are able to offer you a complimentary upgrade. Good luck!

It is also worth faxing or emailing them prior to your arrival .. especially if you are celebrating a special occasion.

It was my 30th Birthday trip this year and I faxed the Grand Floridian approx. a week before to let them know ... disguised as a request for a crib in the room I just advised them that it was also my birthday and if there was any possibility of a comp updgrade.

We were upgraded from a standard Garden View to the club floor with Castle view ... I was overwhelmed.

This is the second thread regarding upgrades. I don't understand why, if you want a better room you just don't reserve it and pay for it like the rest of us. I just don't understand people expecting things for free. After all is said and done, Disney is a business. You would never think to go into a restaurant, order a hamburger and ask them if you can "upgrade" it to a lobster dinner. You want something, pay for it.

Upgrades don't happen at the DVC resorts, except in extreme circumstances, usually involving maintenance issues. For instance, the studio they assigned to you has a plumbing problem that can't be fixed quickly. All other studios are occupied. They have no choice but to put you in a 1-bedroom villa.

So...we have 2 threads about free upgrades.

Is this only an issue in the hotel industry?

I mean, I don't go to Applebee's and order a cup of soup, smile sweetly at the server and ask for the steak. (and expect to get it)

If I want steak, I plan to pay for it.

If I want to pay an extra $50 for a "view" then I expect to pay for it.

Maybe it's just a midwestern thing. Do we have less of a sense of entitlement??

I agree. I would never ask for a free upgrade. If I get offered an upgrade for free, then that would be great.....I'd love for that to happen. But in my opinion it is a bit tastless to come right out and ask for one. Just my opinion.

I agree. I have been told at check in once at the Poly and twice at WL that I had been assigned a higher room category than the one I had booked. None of those times did I ask; the room had already been given to us. I also asked when checking in at the Contemporary if I could pay to upgrade from my garden wing room to the tower. But I would never ask to get one for free.

It's not a midwestern thing. It's a people thing. I am from NY and if I want a better room with a view, that's what I book and I pay for it. Some people just want something for free. They tend to forget that Disney is first and foremost in business to make money, not give things away.

Thanks for the back-up....

This does not work anymore. All requests are now sent over to the Res Center and it is handled by them. If you call the resort directly, they will transfer you to the res center. Best thing to do if you have a request is put your request on your reservation when you book it or have your travel agent do it. Keep in mind, if you make any changes to your reservation, you want to make sure any requests are still on there. Sometimes when changes are made the requests get wiped out....
