I beleive I read that the rooms in the Hawaii building are being refurbished this summer. Does anyone know what they may be doing there?
Thank you so much!

The original Polynesian longhouses (with the exception of Raratonga) are going through major rehabs. They are removing the floor and filling it in with cement. The rooms at the Polynesian were constructed like the contemporary. The rooms were built and were then slid in to the longhouses afterward. So there are empty spaces between floors. When it would rain water would collect and cause the rooms to get a damp feeling. They are fixing this and doing the usual room rehabs (carpet, pain, etc.) Aotearoa, Fiji, and Tuvalu are all completed. Samoa is under rehab now and will reopen on April 20th. Hawaii will be closed from June 1-September 27. Concierge services will be moved to the Tahiti longhouse. Tonga will be closed from September 14-December 20 and Niue will be closed from September 28-December 20.

The construction is not an inconvinience to guests though. We stayed there this year while Tuvalu was being redone. There is nothing that bothers you. I don't want people to miss out on this great resort because they think the construction will be a problem. The only problem I see out of this is when Hawaii is closed. Tahiti is far from the Resorts main facilities (great ceremonial house, nanea volcano pool, marina, etc.). This means you are paying top dollar for the concierge room but you aren't going to have that terrific location.

Actually I disagree with Tahiti not being a good location. You may be farther from everything but the pool is only a short beach walk away and the beach down in front of Tahiti is so much quieter. You are also very close to the TTC which I find I use quite often. The rooms are larger and have 2 sinks in the bathrooms. Even being farther from the GCH you are less than a 5 minute walk.

As far as what they are doing to the Hawaii longhouse, yes they are doing the foundation modifications but while it is down they are doing some major redesign to the Lounge and check-in area. What exactly can not be posted because they do not want the plans reveled. The staff is very excited about the changes planned for the Hawaii longhouse. They should be done by September.

Aloha

I think the building needs rehab. It is nice but the lounge seems a little drab and my room had a whole in the floor that you only noticed when you stepped in it. I still liked the rooms though, I loved the green marble in the bathrooms. I would recommend staying concierge at the Poly no matter what building it is located in. The concierge staff is excellent at the Poly. Oh yea, compared to the AKL, the tvs are small.
