Poly lobby - don't change a thang!

Changing the look of the Poly to what? It's polynesian looking now. This is so upsetting.

Please understand, I'm an Interior Designer. What got me started in this field years ago and what was my original inspiration to become a designer of interior spaces was..WDW! Specifically, the original hotels. That, combined with supreme memories of good family times at the Poly, plus my love for all things tiki/retro, you can understand my reluctance to move on and "update" the GCH appearance. Villas are great but if it means that you have to start ripping out classic Disney hotel lobbys, well that's not good - wish they could expand on the existing theme, add spaces, reupholster sofas, replace skylights, improve the fountain, preferably with a nod to the past. Contemporary, I'm looking at you, too. (Do we really need 10,000 shades of beige as the main color scheme? Celebrate your retro-ness! A nod and a wink to it at the very least. We have enough Marriott-looking hotels in the world).

..and not for nothin, It's Disney! If they can't figure how to run a fountain in a hotel lobby than who can!?
Kinda like the Contemporary resort. From1971 to 2013. Changes there...........

I can’t share the details but there will be a new water feature in the lobby. The poor design of the pump system is built into the rock structure and to replace it would mean dismantling the rock itself so it is coming out. They also wanted a clear view from the entry out the back of the lobby toward the beach. As far as not changing the look of the lobby in a drastic way, this is not the first time the lobby has had a drastic change to its look.

I love the Polynesian as much as the next person but I’m not going to get upset over something I can’t control. Also for all the people saying they are going to change the feel of the resort by adding bungalows because it is such a huge change must not have been around in 1978 or 1985. In 78 they added on a second pool, a huge longhouse and the building for Tangaroa Terrace, Snack Isle, the Arcade, the laundry room and the Mouseketeer Club (later became the Neverland Club). I don’t see anyone saying how they ruined the feel of the resort when they did that or when they added two more longhouses in 1985. All they are physically adding to the resort are 20 bungalows. Im sad to see Sunset Pointe get changed but I don’t see it stopping me from enjoying the resort.

I am as nostalgic about the resort as anyone. It was where we stayed on my first trip in 1974 and has been a place we visit practically every trip. We too take pics in front of the water feature each time we go and have seen my kids grow up with each one. However I also don't want to have this place be frozen in time either. There is so much potential to make this look like a classy, upscale, tropical resort with water features to keep the "feel" of our beloved poly. Now if they just ripped it all out and put in a drab beige lobby with no water feature at all...then I'll be stopping elsewhere.

That is what I am afraid of. Though I know I should give Disney more credit. I have no problem with them updating. For a deluxe resort, it should look like one right? But I just don't want it to turn into some boring, empty, spacious room.

New scent in Poly that has been making me wheeze last time I was there in August.

Other than that, no one knows. Having been to the real Hawaii, it looks very dated and more like the airport than anything in the real Hawaii

Change is good when done right, and from what tikiman is saying so far, the changes will be for the better. Up to code GCH, no more dated look, a new water feature. I look forward to a fresher POLY, we were there in September and saw a new room and longhouse, very nice. Better colors, not so drab. This resort is on the rebound finally, and will become the new resort to be at. Unfortunately the prices will reflect it too.

The resort will get some new more upscale amenities but it will not look like a resort in Hawaii, for many reasons. I have discussed this on my site and other places so I will try and keep this brief. Having stayed for long summers with relatives in Maui since the early 80s, having stayed on the other islands for family vacations and owning a time share in Hawaii for 10 years I can tell you that most hotels in Hawaii are not representative of Hawaii. They are whatever the trend is at the time in the islands for hotels. You have to look hard to see anything in the design of Hawaiian Hotels that represents the culture but then you don’t have to make people feel like they are in Hawaii because they are surrounded by Hawaii. Some of the most famous and popular resorts in Hawaii have nothing to do with the culture of Hawaii. The Polynesian will never and should never look like an upscale Hawaiian resort. Also the Polynesian is not a Hawaiian hotel but a mix of many of the Pacific Islands. Other than a wet play area and the re-themeing of the Neverland club, there will be nothing that will be similar to Aulani to my knowledge. There will be a lot of inspiration taken from the look and feel of Adventureland in the things being added to the Polynesian and I think that is very appropriate to the look and feel that the Polynesian was intended to portray. It should be dated and not a modern deluxe resort. Luckily there are many other deluxe resorts at WDW to stay at if that is not what you are looking for.

at the poly right now. other than the amazing bar and gch, I have waited my entire life for this. ugh. what a disapointment. kind of sad. waited since... well 1979 for this. kind of umm a not so great hotel, with an amazing check-in and bar space. On the way here, we stayed at a 4 diamond hotel with amazing dining and incredible resort space, then the royal pacific at universal..thinking poly was going to blow them away.. and meh. already had a run-in- (no bag delivery while at the park? pop will leave the bags in your room- $300-400 a night, and you need to sit in your room to receive bags, really???). Missing the resort in VA, or at least the Royal, where they kissed up- above and beyond, amazing service, etc.
I do not get it. I am surprised. The more I spend at Disney, the less I seem to get. sigh.

Disney stopped in-room package delivery at all the resorts a while ago, unless you are staying club level. Which longhouse are you staying in? If Tahiti or Rapa Nui, you have definitely been short-changed, as those have not undergone the recent room refurbishment (since they will be becoming DVC).

Ok so now that DVC Villas are officially being built at the Poly, what upgrades will be made at the resort in general and specifically, my beloved lobby/Great Ceremonial House?

There's retro goodness galore there and I would hate to see TOO much change. Additions, yes. A gym, another QS (perhaps a seperate location that ONLY sells Dole Whip so that Capt Cooks can concentrate on hot food).

Who knows what's up at the Poly!? Do tell.
Heard the Polynesian has a NEW sponsor..........SPAM! Say it ain't so?!;)
