Pokemon Go at Disneyland

Pokemon Go takes up a lot of battery since the camera and the gps are turned on. It's also hard to get connected because of the overwhelming response to it. The servers are flooded.

Most people in lines are staring at their phones in line. Most are messaging people. (most likely messaging people around them) Kids are always playing games in line. It keeps them occupied instead of their parents actually interacting with them. Disney needs to tap into this market with something fun to do in line.
The battery use is almost scary. They say they're working on a "fix" but... What the heck could they do?

I agree Pokemon Go is no worse than any other phone use at the parks. At least there's a photographically creative aspect to using it, and it does point people toward park details they might have missed otherwise. I'm sure Disney's discussing they're own park AR possibilities right now. :)

This discussion is fascinating. Assuming that the technology behind Pokemon Go isn't a fad and that more geo-tagged scavenger hunt mobile games are coming, Disney should be watching how this develops very carefully. 15 people distracted by a game in an attraction that they've spent a large sum of money to experience says a lot about the power of this particular app.

I wonder if security would give me a hassle, though. I don't even bring binoculars for riding POTC anymore because it was just becoming ridiculous to explain it to the security guards. They have a hard enough time understanding that I don't have a cell phone.

I once got stopped at the airport because I had my Atari Lynx battery pack in my game case. That thing holds six D-cells and wires going the Lynx. It very much looks like a bomb to the x-ray machine. Sad part is it only lasts about four hours.

At Mickeys Phillarmagic, about 15 people (young and old) were all on Pokemon Go

Not during the freaking show I hope~!

The last time I saw Philharmagic, the lady cast member who was telling the audience to turn off their phones got a little tough on some stupid girl who was still texting. The CM told her, "Ma'am, the show lasts about eleven minutes. You can live without your phone for that long." Man, I wish I'd gotten that lady's name. I'd love to commend her to TDO. Not that I'd tell TDO exactly what she'd done; they might think her rude, horrors! But I think she did exactly the right thing. WDW needs more CMs like her.

Didn't you people ever watch Star Trek: The Next Generation? A hostile alien force nearly took control of the Enterprise by addicting everyone to a portable video game. Where's Data?

So you're walking around in a place full of wonders staring at your iPhone? Really?

Jeez.
This is a special occasion; the game's new, it's fun, and it lends itself to creating funny photos in famous places. Pairing up Disney characters and Pokemon in the same shot is a kick. And the tech involved is pretty amazing.

Plus, the game uses the phone camera-- so you're looking at your surroundings-- and points you toward details you might pass over otherwise. Used properly, it can actually be s tool of discovery.

That said, phones should never be used on attractions if it disrupts the experience for others.

One of Pee Wee Crusher's best episodes! Ironically, Will Wheaton went on to become a gamer Celebrity.

Pokemon Go's a lot more fun than that game, and fortunately doesn't give out that, um, "reward" when leveling up.

OMG so obnoxious! I was just there Thursday and my group and I literally were having to avoid groups of people just standing around playing this app
How is this more obnoxious than any other use of a phone in the park... unless it's really happening constantly... In which case I should've bought Nintendo stock a couple of weeks ago. At least it doesn't use selfie sticks.

I would have to say that it truly is an issue! There were literally groups of 3 to 10 just standing around or hoping into corners just to catch an invisible object. Why not enjoy the park around you that you just spent $100+ to enjoy?

Because of the nature of the game; the fun is in seeing the creatures come to life in the real world around you. This is a chance to get a photo of Pikachu meeting the Mad Hatter. I'm sure--at least I hope--most players at DL are frequent visitors just having fun seeing the park in a different way. Don't worry; the game should be exiting its "big new craze" phase soon and usage will drop.
