"Port Orleans to undergo extensive renovations!

Port Orleans Resort will undergo an extensive room renovation that will take approximately 2 years to complete. The French Quarter rooms will be done first and the entire resort will be closed during this time. The rooms will get all new furniture, carpet, bathrooms and wall coverings.

Effective today (April 4) no reservations will be taken for the resort.

Disney will be contacting guests who currently have reservations at the French Quarter to move them to another moderate resort. More details as they become available."

honestly its probably needed, when i stayed there 2 times this summer both rooms had some sort of scum around the air conditioner vents. it was nasty stuff and when we had it cleaned it the allergy attack i had all week was gone. may have been coincidence but i have had this problem around mildew and stuff bfore.

HMMM--the Disney website won't let me book POFQ for Sept 8 or July 8. There's 2 questions I haven't seen before:

What is your home zip code?
Have you visited this section of this site since April 2, 2003?

(What's with that?? )

Wonder if you can book it over the phone.......

Introducing ...Destination Disney. The new computer system that will be capable of remembering everything you did while on vacation at Disney as well as provide other information to serve you better. Not to mention it is a great marketing tool to search those guests that havent visited in a while and offer them speacials discounts based on their past visits to entice them to return.

Hi Travis, This doesnt have anything to do with FQ closing but I am curious because I have never spoke on a forum like this with a WDW employee. I would really be interested in learning what WDW pays their employees and what kind of benefits they offer. If you dont want to post on here you can pm me or if you prefer not to at all I totally understand. I am just doing a little research for maybe a location change someday and have always wondered what it is REALLY like to work there. Were you a big WDW fan before going to work there and if so has that changed much? Any other employees who read this may respond or pm me also.

Wanna bet!!!:hammer:

Well I guess if they're gonna do a rehab, now is the time whilst attendances are stunted.

As a side note, currently Virgin Holidays are still offering FQ through October, but I guess this is just slow reactions on their part.

The last time it closed they admitted that it was due to the lacking attendance after 9/11. They also refurbished the food court during that time. Now, it looks like PO will be getting a much needed (IMO) room rehab.

YEs, I hope they do Riverside as well. When we were there last year I noticed some real nasty rips in the wallpaper and the tiles around the bath were all cracked.

And Virgin have now removed POFQ from their online booking website.

I certainly understand the need for a rehab but I am disappointed with the length of the rehab. In the past, no resort has ever closed for such a ridiculous period of time for a rehab. First Great Movie Ride for 4 months and now my beloved PO for two years. What's next, closing down all of Magic Kingdom for a decade or so. On a side note, can anyone recommend Coronado Springs Resort? I was going to stay at PO in 2004 but now I probably won't be able to.

Port Orleans is closing in phases, with FQ opening in the fall, and Riverside only closing in phases (never completely closing).

There is really no reason to be upset over this. The resorts need the rehabs. French Quarter was in pretty bad shape when I was there. I am usually so Pro Disney to look past a chip here and there, but Port Orleans was getting to a point of digusting. The Bathrooms in the rooms weren't looking good at all. Just be happy that Disney is doing this. Otherwise they would charge you $150 a night to stay in a destroyed room.

Yes technically it is closing in phases but that is only because of the recent joining of PO and DL. I really love FQ. :( Oh well, at least when I do get to visit the resort it'll be fresh and new looking. :)

FQ is the best of the moderate resorts! But if they put in a sit down restaurant and increase the size of the cafeteria, then I can handle the closing. But otherwise I love the fact that FQ isn't so massive unlike Riverside or CB or CS.

My boss is leaving tomorrow with her family for PO-FQ. I told her the news that she's one of the last families in there before it shuts down for rehab! I'll be curious to find out her thoughts/comments on how the place looks when she returns. I imagine it will be crowded for the upcoming Easter recess, but then again..who knows? :)

Well, my boss is back from vacation and informed me that her trip to PO-FQ was great. In her opinion, her room did not show signs of wear and tear. The only slight complaints she said were the tub drain ( took too long for the water to go down), and a slight rip on the blanket. Both were too minor to complain about. She was surprised to hear the resort was being closed for renovations, as there were no visible signs of it being closed down for some time ( scaffolding, abundance of workers, etc). Then again, it's still 10 days away.

Oh well - thought I would give an update!:)

Being to the POR resort so many times it always seems to be busier than POFQ, even since 9/11. When we were there back in July they were repainting a=and doing up some of the blocks close to the main centre - 17,18,19.

Also there was a group of disney officials who came to the pool and asked us to try out some new beds they would be putting out. The pool was to done up with the removal of the bridge (which at the time was closed off), there would also be a new water feature added onto the island in the middle of the pool.

In my opinion it is one of the best moderate resorts and with the exception of AK travel times are very good. There was no damage in our room any time we have stayed at the resort
