Snagged a pre-order for a PS4 holiday bundle from Walmart.com after everyone else's preorders were long gone. So yesterday DS16 finally gets his PS4 for Christmas aaaaaaand it won't play any games. The games start to load then the thing freezes up and crashes. They ran updates, returned to factory settings and updated again in case of a corrupt software update. Nope. My 19 yro nephew who also got a PS4 brought over one of his games that worked on his console to try on ours to make sure it wasn't an issue with the game. Nope. Will not run games. It will play DVDs....sooooo....$400 DVD player????? I contacted Walmart.com. They'll refund me but cannot replace the console because they don't have any to replace it with. No surprise. So now I have to find somewhere to buy another PS4. Sure hate that my kiddo's Christmas gift was such a frustrating bust for him. Yesterday had quite the little black cloud hanging over it. Ugh!

Sorry for the vent. I'm just sad for the kiddo. My hubby, on the other hand, is fit to be tied over the whole thing. LOL!

Odd. I had heard about a bad batch of Xbox Ones, but this is the first I've heard about bad PS4s.

Sorry it worked out so poorly! Good luck getting a new one!

He finally got thru to Sony's support. He's running thru stuff w/their tech right now. Still looks bad. He loads Assassins Creed Black Flag, the menu comes up, then when the game begins the screen goes black but you can hear the cut scene sounds. Within seconds it goes to a blue screen and that's it. Nothing. I think the console is defective. Then again, what do I know? LOL!

This sounds like the same thing that happened when the 360 first came out. They rushed production to deal with the Christmas rush and the quality suffered. Everyone I know who got one from that period of time had a red ring of death within a year or so. After that I decided to never buy a new console during the holidays.

It sure sounds like it is!

Good luck!
So Sony's support tech ran thru several procedures with DS16 to no avail. I thought it was cool that she didn't condescend or anything to him. The boys run into that sometimes because they're teens & it irks 'em. The console is defective. They're sending out packaging & labels to ship it back to Sony. When they receive it they'll ship us a new replacement console. The whole process should take 2-3 weeks. I feel so bad for my son but he's being really cool about it.

So there ya go. Defective PS4 consoles are out there. I'm satisfied with Sony's efforts to make it right. At least this way I don't have to stand in returns lines at Walmart or hunt down such a hard-to-find item.

Now for the next chapter.......... DS17 decided after my first preorder that he wanted a PS4, too. So that didn't happen, obviously. Yesterday he got an email alert from Best Buy that they had some online. He jumped on & ordered himself one (his $$). He's going to have his within 2 weeks. If he gets his before my younger son I can totally see him rubbing it in. I so don't want WWIII breaking out in this house over these stupid game consoles. Ugh!

I also purchased an extended warranty (2 or 3 years?) from Sony while I had the tech on the phone. $60 for this type of replacement/repair service including accidental damage such as dropping it, etc. We aren't surprised for the exact reasons you said. It is what it is. The risk totally was outweighed by the gamer kid's excitement to get started transitioning to the new system. LOL!

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
I stood in line on a cold, rainy Friday morning (November 22) for the release of the X-Box One.
I was so excited to actually get one.

As much as hubby wanted to play it immediately, he agreed to wait until Christmas morning, and let me wrap it to remove any temptation.
So he sets it up yesterday at noon, expecting to play NBA 2K14 immediately, only to be faced with 5 HOURS OF UPDATES.
Oops, my bad.

It's amusing because this was one of the ads for PS4...

They are referring to the XBox 360 which had a series of bad batches that shipped that would "red ring of death"...

Xbone is always waiting for you guys (and watching, always watching thanks to it's Kinect system!)

Yep. We have a 360. It's barely ever been played. I guess it's safe to say the boys have picked their system & gaming network. At this point they've got so much invested in their content I don't think they'd ever give in & switch. Although the big PSN hack last year had them really discussing it. LOL!

I hear ya. I actually gave in & let my DH hubby go ahead & have his new CyberPower CPU early so he could run his updates, load his flight sims, and trouble-shoot everything before Christmas. His argument was that Christmas Day he had to cook jambalaya so his whole morning would be eat up doing that stuff instead of actually playing/flying. He had to go to work today so he wouldn't have the day after for all his fun. How do I argue with that???

I was a late adopter for the last generation of consoles and 360 won overall with my friends so I kinda had to buy the same thing if I wanted to play online with them. I'm dragging my feet again though and PS4 is winning among people I know.

I'd be an early adopter if it didn't mean dealing with all the issues that usually pop up. Plus I have a bunch of 360 I need to get to so I don't really need a new console.

Probably would not want the Xbone anyway. I don't need a device to make it easier for my girlfriend to hijack the TV from me and that is what their ads love to show for some reason...
