planning for bittersweet trip in June

I'm finally really starting to plan my trip to WDW June 12-19 This past weekend. I will be taking my mother(DM), my DS5, and hopefully my DH. I'm happy and excited to be going, but it's very bittersweet. My father died of colon cancer in December. WDW was one of his two favorite places in the world (the other being Wrigley Field. GO CUBS). What makes it even worse was in October we were planning a trip in June for all 5 of us at the Contemporary because the oncologist told us Dad was in partial remission. THe PET scans missed all kinds of stuff, but, we didn't find that out until November (Stupid mutations).

To make matters worse, DH lost his job in January. He is getting unemployment and has had a few job interviews. We're waiting to here on one right now. If a new job will let him have the time off unpaid, DH will go with us, otherwise it will just be DM, DS5 and I. We booked POP on the 7 for 4 deal and are getting the dining plan. DM is using life insurance money to pay for the whole trip now that DH doesn't have a job.(i do like my mom's financial advisor).

Where would be a good spot to scatter some of Dad's ashes without getting in trouble while we're down there?

First, my deepest sympathy to you on the loss of your dad. I know how difficult this is for you. I lost my dad six months ago...a week before our trip to Disney World for DH's and my 25th anniversary trip. My dad only got to Disney twice--once with each of my two kids. I knew it would be a difficult trip for me with the loss so close to the trip and then going into Epcot which was dad's favorite park. I bought a balloon--something dad always did for the kids and gave it to a little girl in a stroller in my dad's memory. I knew this would make him happy.

As for the ashes, I still have my dad's ashes in an urn in my dining room. We have not yet figured out where we might scatter them. I do know there are laws, etc., about doing this in a public place so you might want to look into that first.

I hope your DH's job interview goes well and that a job comes to him quickly.

And again, I am sorry for your loss. But remember, when you arrive at Disney, the good times you had with your dad. Yes, there will be a few tears, but there will also be a lot of laughs and love in your heart.

Dear Schultz Family, I offer you my deepest sympathies. My DH and DS and I went to WDW every year for 23 years. This was DH very favorite place to vacation. Then DH passed suddenly, 3 years ago. We have not been able to talk ourselves into returning, but are hopefully planning an entire family thing in 2010. My prayers are with you and your family and hopefully you will only have goods times. I will remember you in my prayers.

I know just how you feel =( I too just lost my dad in Nov. suddenly. We all had just booked a family trip to disney world in Sept. to celebrate his 60th b-day before he died. He was so excited he was going back to disney world for the first time with his 3 grandchildren. At first we wanted to cancel our trip, but we know the grandkids would be upset. I know he would be so mad at us if we did that!! But he, just like your dad, will be with us everyday at the parks, pushing us to see as much as we can. It will be hard !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope by June you will be stronger, and I pray by Sept. I'll be stronger too !!! Funny that your dad was a died hard cubs fan, my dad was a died hard white sox fan !!!!!!(southsider)

Sympathies to you and your family. We have been down that road. A friend of the family went with us in Nov 2007 and was dead in Feb 2008. She was supposed to be going this coming November with her family - but obviously that's not happening.

The family scheduled a trip this past November to mark the exact week we went the week before - just in time for the XMas party.

As for the ashes, although it's not "permitted" based on numerous postings, it's done quite often.

This family I was talking about supposedly scattered their daughter's ashes throughout the MK. One spot was at the Mickey/Walt statue in front of the castle. Then had a photopass picture taken right there.

Another was in the water by the entrance to the monorail.

Yes - I've heard over and over that scattering ashes is not permitted, but done quite often.

My grandparents loved the Polynesian. Every time we go to WDW, I head to the beach at the Poly for a quiet moment of remembrance.

Also, if you are flying they might not be allowed on the plane, some people still consider it a biohazard :brick: So call your airline and make sure it can be done, but i would think in the rose garden would be peaceful, basically anywhere but it's a small world.

Baz first off let pay my respects to you, and your family. As someone who has beat cancer myself i know how hard it was for him and you. As far as the ashes check local laws. Would hate to see a special moment go bad.

My prayers and thoughts will be with you. I understand how hard it is to lose someone to cancer. When I was 20, I even had my own battle with lymphoma.

There isn't much one can type or say to a person in a situation like this. I would just say keep your heads up, remember the good times you had and will have, and remember, Disney is magical. Even in the worse of times, it can some how bring a smile to your face.

Thank you all for your replies. We are driving down so airline regulations will not be a problem. I also do not want the moment to go bad. I was hoping someone on here might know the local laws regarding ashes. I'm a librarian so I could look it up but asking people here is easier. It also let me vent a little. Thanks for listening.

Per one website:


Florida Law does not prohibit scattering ashes. This does not mean, however, that you may spread or scatter the ashes anywhere you choose.
• You should not spread or scatter ashes on public lands or any inland bodies of water such as streams, rivers or lakes, etc.
• You may spread, scatter or bury ashes on any private land that you own or have obtained permission from the owner. We would suggest that you obtain this permission in writing.
• Many states have different laws regarding this subject. If you are considering spreading or scattering ashes somewhere other than Florida, you should check the laws of that state before proceeding.
• Scattering or spreading ashes in the ocean is permitted, however federal regulations do specify this should be done only beyond 3 miles from the coast.

As for doing it at Disney, I know people do it against Disney "laws" I believe Disney does NOT allow spreading of ashes anywhere on property.

I would say go to his favorite place, find the most inconspicous (sp?) spot n go for it.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission....
