Planes

Does anyone else find it interesting that the new movie, Planes, while based on the Cars universe/brand, is not being labeled as "Pixar", but solely Disney?

Unless I missed something and the Corp. has decided to drop the monicer altogether, these seems like a potential giant red flag to me about the quality of this story.

"Planes" doesn't carry the Pixar logo because Pixar's not making it.
It's being produced by Disneytoon Studios in Glendale, the same bunch that made all the direct-to-Walmart CGI Tinkerbell stuff.
And yes, there's red flags all over the project.
Stay away.

Saw the preview before MU. I don't think it's going to win any academy awards. The plot centers around some big plane races with planes from around the world. The main character/plane is a folksy somewhat niave American with his main rival being a fancy Italian plane. Sound familiar?

So, I was at a dinner party over the weekend and was amazed that the parents there immediately started throwing out all of the same concerns that I have:

• Racing? Really? They couldn't come up with an original plot with the planes?
• The bad guy's a green plane exactly like Chick Hicks?

I understand it was originally a made-for-dvd production, but they have to come up with an original story. The movie had better be good and get a lot of good word of mouth or this one's going to bomb. The general reaction to the trailer is not good.

I was never a fan of Cars, so I doubt I take my kids to theatres to see it. I have girls too so they are more into the princesses anyway. With the cost of movies these days and with our Disney trip 6 months away, Ill probably make one trip to the theatres this year and that will probably be for Frozen in November, though Ive been skeptical about it as well. I really wish Disney would do some hand drawn animation but it doesn't look like its gonna happen this year.

Tangled was better than Cars 2 and Brave. Wreck-it Ralph was better than Brave (more original). I'm not going to discount it simply because it wasn't made with the Pixar logo

Has anyone figured out why some airplanes are "male" while others are "female"?
Or why some embody ethnic stereotypes?

I was 100% open to Planes until I found out the story is basically Cars 2 without the cool spy scenes.

Disney, if you're going to milk a franchise at least do it well.

I had a couple free hours this afternoon and caught a matinee of Planes. It was good. I'd put it not quite as good as Cars, but far better than Cars 2.

Sure, it used the same basic formula as Cars, but it worked. I'm glad that I went to see it.

Not really, but perhaps that's because Ripslinger was American, not Italian.

They are male and female because they are anthropomorphic characters. It would be weird if they didn't have gender. Other reasons is because the male/female relationships add interest to the story. Also, since it is in the Cars 'universe', then it would be weird for the automotive vehicles to have gender, but the aeronautical characters to not.
Or why some embody ethnic stereotypes?
I suspect that the best answer for that is to add interest to the film.
