Pizza Or Flatbread.?

Ok folks. Had a discussion today about this.What is the difference between the two.Ive yet to try a flatbread in WDW tho this year we did split the Mezzo Metro at Via Napoli,OMG,OMG,OMG.Anyway,if someone could enlighten me and also tell me where to try the ultimate Flatbread.Cheers.;)

The difference is the dough. Flatbread tends to not have yeast and is rolled very thin with no rounded edge. The classification of "flatbread pizza" vs just "flatbread" tends to do with the toppings. Top it like a traditional pizza with sauce and cheese, although the sauce seems to be somewhat optional, and it is a flatbread pizza. However, there are plenty of places that simply roll the same pizza dough out very thin and call it flatbread.

My wife got the Wild Mushroom Flatbread at Mamma Melrose. That thing was INCREDIBLE!!! We decided it beat any pizza we ever had at Via Nepoli. It was the first time we had ever been to Mamma Melrose and from just the smells at the front door KNEW that it was going to be a great meal.

It also has to do with the shape. Pizza is either a rectangle (sicilian pie) or round. The shape and the thickness is what makes flatbread and pizza different.

That is where you start to get into semantics. Is a round pizza made with flatbread dough no longer a faltbread pizza because it is round? Is an hexagon pizza made with pizza dough no longer a pizza because it is neither round or square? Is a pizza without sauce no longer a pizza? Sometimes I think the question "What is the meaning of life?" is simpler to answer than "What is a pizza?".:) For that reason I tend to go with things like ingredients as a more unambiguous classification method.

For me the dough is the first factor. A non-rising dough is a flatbread pizza. A rising dough is a pizza which can be further defined down to thin, hand tossed, pan, Chicago, Californian, etc.

Either way, if it tastes good you eat the sucker.:D

In Jersey a pizza is round and a flatbread isnt formed... depends on where you live I guess, then there's the *type* of crust, which is an entirely different thing LOL, the basic difference between flatbread and a pizza is pizza is formed, with sides. (Trust me on this) I'm with you, the crust makes the pizza, and if you saw the way we load pizzas in Jersey (especially to a Chef ;) ) you would wonder why the heck we even bother with the crust!!!! A breakfast pizza (or flatbread depending on one's definition of the crust) is outstanding!!!!!

Sounds like Chicago style, which is my favorite. You start with about a 2"-3" deep pan a fairly thick crust then you pack on toppings until you hit the top of the pan. You then add another layer of sauce and cheese. We use to have a good Chicago Pizza here in Jacksonville, but it got sold and the new owners went way cheep on their ingredients. Now it is utter crap and I has a sad. :(

There are so many different variations of pizza its insane. I prefer a thin crust? but cant pass a good chicago style pizza w/sausage and green peppers :)

Thats it.Now am confused as hell,wish I hadn't asked this silly question.LOL. This weekend am gonna ask my wee Italian friend for a thin crust Mexicano pizza with a flatbread look about it.Thats gotta confuse him for sure :) Poor wee Massimo :(

Hand tossed tends to be are go to. With kids that will not eat a vegetable without a gun to their heads it is much easier to get half everything half pepperoni on a hand tossed pizza. There is a great locally owned place here in Jax called Moon River that serves a great hand tossed and we are there just shy of weekly. We also had a wood fired, brick oven pizza place open up in town and they have a great, artsy thin crust pizza. Like you said, there are so many ways to do pizza and each have their own charm. It quite honestly might be the best food on the planet.

Who can diet around here with all this talk about pizza and flatbread? I love a thick, soft crust with loads of toppings. Always drives me crazy when we see are somewhere that serves pizza and you look around and see uneaten crusts on plates everywhere....my favorite part of the pizza.

Hold the phone:eek: You surely don't go around the tables stealing the uneaten crusts,;) Over here thats called Mine Sweeping.LOL.
