Question: Do you pay for the ticket, or for what the ticket lets you do?

Answer: Both.

The ink is so smugged on both my wife's and my AP that you can barely read the member info off of it. It's been like that since we picked it up. It's also getting worse from use. If it was a hard plastic card I wouldn't have this problem.

But is the fact that the ink is smudged truely an issue? Have you been denied admission due to the smudged ink?

If for some reason the Bio scan failed, and they had to cross ref an ID, then the ink could become an issue...

Then it would become a guest service issue....yeah, I can see that. I am not sure what people are doing with the passes to mess them up so much, I take no special care of mine, and I have had no issues.

I haven't had any problem with the Bioscan, but I have had trouble reading the info off the card so I can log into the AP web site.
Take it to guest services and they will print you a new one.

Why did you not mention this when you got them? They could have reprinted them immediately.

Back on point

While I will admit that having a "hard" pass if you will, would alleviate a lot of the issues raised here, I wonder what the cost would be of doing so? Curious: Does Disney have the ability to produce its own tickets? Or do they contract this work out?

If so, wondering what the current cost is. (if they contract out)

Interesting article Speck

So, for some it's clearly a "status" symbol to have something they can "show off to their friends". But at the end of the article it talks about how maybe Sea World cut the cost in half of producing this ticket. Sounds like good business to me. And in the end, it's the benefits you are paying for.

Not a ticket for your wallet.

I posted in a previous post:

The numbers I found are about 12-15 cents per card, but that is based on companies that sell blank cards online. Disney would be able to get them cheaper.

I read your link and while I agree that you could recoup the money spent on the machines quickly, there's maintanence for those machines. Given the # of tickets that would be printed on a daily/monthly/yearly basis, I'm guessing that the "bean counters" (see SATAN), have probably figured out that there's a lesser expensive way of doing this.

Thanks for the info, as it's important to the discussion at hand.
