LOS ANGELES -- Spider-Man caught just about everyone in his web. The superhero's latest adventure, "Spider-Man 3," smashed box-office records with $148 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday.

That put it ahead of the previous record debut of $135.6 million set last summer by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

With $59.3 million on opening day Friday, Sony's "Spider-Man 3" broke the single-day box-office record, also held by "Dead Man's Chest" with $55.8 million in its first day.

Since it began rolling out overseas on Tuesday, "Spider-Man 3" has taken in $227 million in foreign markets, bringing the film's worldwide total to $375 million. In just days, the movie has grossed $117 million more than its whopping $258 million production budget.

In just two days, it also nearly matched the $114.8 million opening weekend of 2002's "Spider-Man," which had held the debut record until "Dead Man's Chest" opened.

"Playing in a record 4,252 locations domestically, "Spider-Man 3" averaged a whopping $34,807 a theater.

Domestically, "Spider-Man 3" could enter its second weekend Friday with $200 million already in the bank.

The gap between "Spider-Man 3" and the No. 2 movie _ DreamWorks and Paramount's "Disturbia" at $5.7 million _ was larger than any other movie's debut. "Disturbia," which had been No. 1 for three-straight weekends, raised its total to $59.9 million."

But alas my friends, the Black Pearl will sail soon......Mwah hah hah...:goodnevil...Revenge, REVENGE!

while I did contribute to the overall to this record, I was quite disappointed with the movie
There were very corny moments and retarded music numbers, especially the whole "emo" part
I thought the first and second were much better

the good thing was that Venom was pretty cool

but I will be at the midnight opening for PotC3 in WDW

Although not the best in the series, I think Spidey 3 is a superior movie to Dead Man's Chest. I'm thinking of going back to see it again, which is a pretty rare thing for me.

I'm not so sure At World's End will top it. So many people were disappointed with Dead Man's Chest that they might not be ready to go opening weekend.

From the looks of the news, it looks like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest still holds the record for fastest movie to reach $100 million.

One of the reasons Spider-Man did so well is that it is in a ton of theaters (over 4,000!)

I wonder how many theaters Pirates will be released in.

I think people will rush to see the new Pirates. A lot of people loved it.

I haven't seen Spider-Man 3 yet, but I'm sure it's good.

But I think Pirates 3 will be HUGE and will definately give Spider-Man 3 a run for its money. :)

I thought Spidey was good, but not as good as the second one. It simply had way too much stuff jam packed into it. I imagine it will make alot of money all week, but then dop out when Shrek comes in.

I'm still indecisive whether or not Pirates will break Spidey's record, but its a possibility since it has a broader audience range. And the trailers have made it look spectacular. But we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

I think the whole opening weekend records are worthless. It only shows a movies popularity for a single weekend. Look at Titanic, it didn't have a great opening weekend...but it did have probably the strongest theatre run of any movie released (maybe with the exception of Gone With the Wind).

I'm not sure that Pirates will do as well as Spidey. Disney really hasn't promoted this movie as much as Spider-Man has been promoted. People knew exactly when Spider-Man was coming...months ago. Disney has released a couple trailers that you really don't see that much on TV. I think if Disney had promoted this film better then things would be different.

It might do as well, but as already stated, it'll all depend on how many theatres Disney has managed to secure for opening weekend. To be fair to Spidey...it did open on 4252 screens (which is the record)..but Dead Man's Chest opened on 4133 (119 less). So it's not really that big of a difference.

I think Disneys will have a hard time getting all the screens, especially since Spider-Man and Shrek will have already come out and will have not yet faded from the public eye.

Oh well....I say forget these movies...and give me Ratatoille.:animwink:

I saw it on Friday. It was a great movie, but honestly I have to argree with Juan because it was really annoying during the part where Spidey had sidebangs and wore eyeliner. I seriously thought they were joking. I thought I was on Punk'd or something... alas, I wasn't and Toby was serious... pelvic thrusts and all.

I think POTC: AWE will beat Spidey's record. I hope it does. :)

I don't think it was meant to be taken seriously in the sense that you weren't supposed to crack a smile. I think Raimi was having fun with the character. The reactions he got from the women on the street showed you that the people in the movie definitely weren't taking him seriously.

Disney should've released Pirates later in the year. It is a crazy summer for movies though...lots of good ones coming out...

Although Dead Man's Chest was awful, I doubt that will keep the movie-hungry populace away from "At World'S End."

I have a feeling this summer is going to break all sorts of box office records...

AWE will not beat SM3's OW record. First of all, SM3 was able to open on this insane amount of screens because nothing has been doing well for weeks and theaters dropped a lot of movies. AWE will be in a position where Shrek the Third (a film that will also provide some major competition, seeing as how it could make over $70m for the weekend alone) will have a lot of screens from the week before and SM3 will probably still be on at least two screens in the larger theaters. AWE is also not having midnights - they will be at 8pm on Thursday - so it won't get the $10m+ it would have to contribute to boost Friday's number (what it makes at 8pm will count for Thursday, just like what happened with The Matrix Reloaded). Marketing might also make a hit into grosses, since it's starting late and there are still many who don't know that it's coming out yet. It will also be VERY frontloaded, resulting in a larger than normal drops on Saturday and Sunday. And finally, with it being a 4-day holiday weekend, a lot of folks will wait until Monday to see it.

That being said, the weekend number should be $125m+, and it may even pass the $135m DMC did. I just can't see it passing the $151m SM3 has done.

Opening Thursday at 8pm, huh? That's wacky. I thought Star Wars opening on Wed. was weird at one point...but Thursday at 8pm?

I haven't heard anything about Thursday at 8 PM. Only at midnight.

But, when it comes to big movies, they usually reserve the right to open when ever they want to, hence Star Wars opening on Wed. and/or Thurs., especially when the movies fall on a holiday, like 4th of July.

Sometimes, other huge movies will boost people's interest in going to the movies in general, in turn actually helping Pirates. Some might be so hyped to going to such huge movies like Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third, that after they see it, they want to continue to be entertained and go see Pirates 3.

Just saw a poll done for E! News and the winner for "Summer Movie You Most Want to See" is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

And the Memorial Day Weekend should only help its earning potential.

I think people will want to see it on the weekends because:
  1. Kids won't have school Monday, so a lot won't hesitate to see it on Sunday.
  2. A lot of people will be too busy doing events and/or family BBQs and will probably see it before Monday.
  3. Memorial Day is genearlly a big movie weekend anyway.
And I suspect that we will see a huge amount of advertising very soon.

Only a little pushing will generate anyone's attention anyway. Pirates doesn't need that much pushing once the word gets out.
