Pirates of the Caribbean Shanghai

Wow. Just wow. That is perhaps the worst post i've read on here.

Obviously you've never heard of Katiebug101.

Edit - besides, what would you call it, other than "sitting in a boat watching a movie"?
It's not a motion simulator, like Star Tours, nor is it an FMV ride like Spider-Man or Transformers, seeing as how the boat doesn't react to any of the projections around it, it just follows its track, guided by water current.

It's like taking the Jurassic Park river adventure, removing 90% of the dinosaurs, and just watching dinosaurs on screens. How boring!

I'm pretty sure we will get the same type of thing for Avatar. Maybe not, but I expect it.

As fun as Shanghai's looks, I like ours the way it is. Lets keep some stuff classic. Sure, some updates and enhancements would be great....be it Mermaids, an extension or a Davy Jones waterfall that actually works, but overall I'm happy.

What gets me is the fact that there are people comparing the Shanghai ride to a youtube video saying "It's just projectors..." Really? I've watched several videos where the people in the video are saying "whoaaa" or "wooow this is so cool!" when they get to the "video scenes."

They're apples and oranges. Two totally different experiences... And two totally unique experiences that you shouldn't be able to compare at all unless you've ridden in person. Like Disney said, they were afraid of leaked YouTube videos of the Pirates ride from Shanghai leaking out making it seem less impressive than it actually is.

So I'm not trusting any "oh its just movie screens" posts on here until I experience it for myself. That's like someone from Shanghai looking at a video of WDW's Mickey's Philharmagic and saying "Oh... Its just a cartoon medley on a screen. That's so lame." When really there are several affects and 3D elements that make it very impressive.

I get that some people don't like 'screen rides' just as much as there are people who DO like them.

IMO, I really think we need a few screen-based attractions here.....not remakes of classic attractions, but when new stuff is on the way, it would not hurt to make a few of them screen/combo rides. Yes, it won't appeal to everyone, but really what does?

Every attraction will have its complainers, its a given....but at least it will show those people who like technology that we are not forgotten about.

I see what Shanghai has done. I appreciate it. I don't want any of our current rides modified. But when the new attractions for SW and Avatar start to take shape, there really should be a similar experience in there somewhere. You classic folks can still have your pirates and splash mountain, and the others can have their screen based.

1. Well, to be fair...Philharmagic IS just a cartoon medley on a screen...
It's existence is solely to eat up time while people wait for their Peter Pans Flight fastpass return.

2. Nobody ever complained about Mystic Manor, an attraction that uses a healthy dose of HD projections, especially in the finale.
That's because MM did it RIGHT. The projections helped tell an immersive story, and they weren't used to deck out an entire room until the end.

Whereas in Shanghai Pirates, the projectors ARE the story.

Those that say it's just a movie on a screen" or "just a glorified Gran Fiesta Tour" would be the first to muddy their tighty whiteys if they ever got to see it in person.

The point was that Mickey's Philharmagic is actually very impressive when you experience it in person and a fan favorite to many many people.

Just watched the video and it looks incredible!
I do like Disney World's version, it's a classic and a family favourite. I'm not a huge fan off screen rides myself but from seeing the video it looks like something special. Like others have said, I don't think you can really judge until you've experienced both rides in person, there's only so much you can get from watching a Youtube video. If you watch a video of a ride you've been on, you know that the feeling of being on the ride is completely different.
I love that there are different versions of rides, it's what makes the parks different. Hopefully one day I'll get to ride POTC in Shanghai because it looks amazing!

No it's not. It's a 3D movie with a smellitzer and an AA Donald Duck rear end.

There's the race for Space, the dash for Splash, and the "eh, we've got a few minutes" for Philharmagic.

Actually, it's not guided by water current. It's guided by a track.

There are also some really good animatronics, a couple of big boats and sets and stuff like that. And the use of screens and projectors seems very effective. It gives the ride a depth that physical sets just could not achieve. I'm pretty happy with the balance.

But balance is the key word, it's simply incorrect to call this "sitting in a boat watching a movie."

I am really torn on this. I would never want it to see it replace our Pirates of the Caribbean, but at the same time I would like to see something with that technology because Disney doesn't have anything like that currently. The river ride in Avantar land is a good start........ Fingers crossed. But the whole thing that made me feel torn was after I showed my wife the online video, which keep in mind she never watches, but she watched the whole ride then looked at me and said, why can't we get rides like this ....

I've watched the full video of the ride by the way...

I guess I feel like "meh" about it...This ride is pretty much about the film franchise... At least the originals aren't completely centered around the films...I guess I was impressed with a lot of it...but I do get really tired of screens and projectors becoming the majority of ride experiences...

Why bother investing money when MK is the most visited theme park in the world and spending per guest has been increasing steadily. They have no reason to invest money.

It is kind of a weird thing. With Shanghai, they're trying to convince people to go there - they need it to wow people. With WDW, people are already going there - doesn't matter what they do.

The same thing happens in politics: if you know that a certain demographic is going to vote for you no matter what then you really don't have to do anything for them except give them lip service. No matter what they'll still show up and pull the lever for you because at least you're not that evil other party! People do it, each election cycle, always blaming the other party for their own party's indifference towards them. It's bizarre but there's a certain logic to it. (I don't want this to get political and this cuts both ways and is directed at both parties (USA)).
