Pirates of the Caribbean refurb??

So why is it being refurbished? Adding more characters? Or just fixing any potential glitches? I'm so glad they did this NOW instead of when I was down there a few weeks ago. I would've been devastated if it was closed down during my trip.

Any idea if this will effect the Jack Sparrow show outside of POTC?

No cometic work.

Just water pumps.

How could there be a license issue when Disney owns the license?

Disney actually didn't own the rights to use the Black Pearl when they did the last rehab. Check out this excerpt from Terry Rossio's blog that was written after he rode DL's PotC during the premiere of Dead Man's Chest:

Midway through the ride, I note with some amusement that Barbossa is on a ship which could have been the Black Pearl, but the sails are not black. Reason is, Disney does not want to pay any small tiny percentage of gate fees to the writers, so they can't use in the ride any physical items or props that were described in specific detail in any of the screenplays. Same thing with some of the toys, that's why you see Black Pearl toy sets for sale where the Black Pearl has grey sails. For the record, as of this writing, Disney has not been willing to pay a single dollar in royalties to the writers (that's us!) for any book, video game, toy, amusement park installment, poster, jewelry item, t-shirt, lunchbox or any other product associated with the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films, even when specifically called for in our contract. Which is kind of sad, really.

I think I read somewhere that Disney has finally paid for the rights, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Hmm.... I'm not that familiar with how rights are dealt with in movies, but after reading Terry's response and looking at the date it was written, I'm wondering if this little blurb wasn't just a result of pre-Writer's Strike angst.

I wonder if there was really more of an issue than he let's on. If Disney really "can't use in the ride any physical items or props that were described in specific detail in any of the screenplays" why is the Cursed Aztec Treasure Chest in the Disneyland version of the ride?
