Pirates @ McDonald's

Does anyone know why in the world McDonald's is not promoting Pirates this year?

I mean...with the strong partnership they have with Disney, why in the world would they choose to promote a Dreamworks release like "Shrek The Third" over Pirates, when they've promoted the previous two films in a very successful way.

They are no longer partnered with Disney, they ( Disney) have ended that relationship in regards to promoting movies. They are still in the parks though.

Yeah.

I was wondering about Pirates @McDonald's.

But now I remember they ended the contract. I remember the article in the paper: "McDonald's loses Disney, gains Shrek."

Why?

I wasn't aware of this...does anyone know why this is?

Someone must have messed up pretty bad to not have this relationship continue.

Either way, you would think that they would have gotten some other chain like Wendy's or Taco Bell to promote the film for them.

Nobody messed up anything. When the announcement was made it was because Disney is striving for "healthier menu selections" and fast food did not fit in to that plan, so going to another chain would not change anything. It was nothing that McDonald's did, is was a conscious decision made on Disney's part.

There was a big discussion here on the boards so if you do a search you should be able to come up with the info.

...based entirely on PR. Once the anti-fat fad dies down they will be partners again. It has made money for both and McDonalds knows its not personal. Ironic were talking about this now... they just announced they are switching to no trans-fats. Good for them.

For the sake of a healthier America, I hope it's not just a fad!

See I heard it the oppposite way. I heard McDonald's was not happy w/ promoting Disney movies anymore because of their recent flops. They weren't selling Happy Meals anymore w/ movies like Atlantis and Treasure Planet. I could be mistaken though.

Basically, both arguments are right. Disney was getting Public Relations flack for letting their movies be used to promote unhealthy foods. Plus McDonald's spent a lot of money to be the exclusive fast-food tie-in to Disney movies for 10 years, so when a lot of the movies tanked at the box office (AND discerning parents started cutting fast food down or out of their kids' diet), it didn't make financial sense for McDonald's to spend that much cash for exclusive rights to Disney product.

It's now on a movie by movie basis, but that sets up variables much like studios optioning the rights to a book before it's released. Other fast-food chains could also bid for the rigts to a particular movie, which could start a bidding war. And if 2 or more movies geared towards kids come out at the same time, each fast-food chain has to gamble that the movie their food promotes will be successful. I guess, at the time, Shrek seemed more of a sure thing than Pirates when it came to getting kids to get mom and dad to take them to McDonald's. (off-topic, but is any fast-food restaurant offering up a Ratatouille tie-in? Rats making food, don't know if any chain wants to be associated with that :D ) But during the holidays, there may be a Disney-McDonald's tie-in yet.

There may be one other variable, at least as far as Pirates is concerned. I don't know if there is any sort of Pirates-fast food tie in. There may be and I just haven't seen it advertised anywhere (I don't eat nearly as much fast food as I used to). But if there isn't a fast food tie-in for Pirates, anywhere, it might be something Jonny Depp nixed. He was interviewed in Entertainment Weekly and touched a bit on what he felt comfortable or uncomfortable lending his image to sell (what I most remember is him feeling like a pirate with half-rotten teeth was not the best spokesperson for toothpaste). Maybe burgers and shakes was one of those things. Again, I've no idea, and there might be a big BK or Wendy's or Roy Rogers tie in with Pirates and I just don't know about it.
