Pins...Hmmmm....
I guess I have seen this from both sides. I have a friend who is a pin crazed fanatic in Florida...whenever we went to the parks, which was more than once a week sometimes, he HAD to stop at every pin cart and store to see what they had. It came to the point where we would leave him at home, and go without him. I have about 3 lanyards with pins, and I havent bought one since I bought the employee imagineering pin before I was no longer with the company.
I have had the privilage of helping out some wonderful people by getting exclusive pins for them, and by trading pins on lanyards while I worked at the resort. There are some great people out there! I think the pins are a colorful and compact item to collect for people of all ages. And the price really isnt bad!
(I have had the privilage of seeing the cost vs. markup on some of the stuff they sell... believe me , you could do much worse!)
All I can say for all those traders out there, remember, if a CM is wearing a childrens only pin lanyard, thats the way it is. I had no control over what pins are on the lanyards, and they do get changed daily. CM's out here were not required to wear a lanyard...it is optional. The nicer you are, the nicer everyone else is!

THAT'S MY POINT! All things pin. I'm just saying of all the crap that bothers me I just hate to see more attractions, shops and space lost to this pin craze. They are dedicating WAY to much space to this, the hat really bothers me.Soon the castle will become a pin store, then they'll close spaceship earth and make it a pin trading area(like that other area in future world) Its not that I don't think they are cool, some are pretty neat and would make great keepsakes.although the lanyards are pretty much useless anywhere besides the parks. The deal is, pins are small they don't need entire buildings or as much space as they currently dedicate to them,if another building closes to become a pin trader- I'm comin out of the booooth.

Fieval's kool-I ain't raggin on your pins Fiev you earned them puppies. But if I see you wearing a lanyard with beauty and the beast pins or something like that, its rag time.

pin

I really like getting pins, because they remind me of disney events or rides or movies near and dear to me, or they look really cool. im not into the collectible money thing, i just like to look at my pins. every once in a while i will wear one on my peacoat to give it a disney touch. i have one shaped like the buckle up sign at the world exits, i love that one.

I've got nothing against pins. In fact, I think that pin trading is a great way for CMs and guests to start a conversation. I don't collect tons and tons of pins. I get just a couple that I like, but I've been doing that for years (way before pin trading).

A pin trading cart here and there isn't bad. And a pin store in the marketplace is acceptable, I guess. But having a pin trading place under the hat in MGM is too much. There are other places in MGM that a pin trading area could have been built, and not a place that blocks other buildings. :xmas:

It isn't just you. I don't like the hat as the new icon for the studios either.

I like collecting pins. I also like trading with cast members.

I've had fun collecting the pins that I have and will probably continue to do so. My only complaint is that they make too many too quick! I would rather that the pins be something special, rather than just "lets make as many as we can!".

Also I really get tired of the people who buy a ton of the LE pins only to try and sell them for twice the price on Ebay. I know there is technically nothing wrong with that but it just makes it kind of hard to enjoy at times.

I collect pins BUT only AP (Annual Passholder) pins and New attarctions. So yes I have all the Mission SPACE pins except the imagineer pins still working on that. I also have all the Philharmagic pins exclduing the imagineer one. But I havent gone crazy and gone out buying every pin thats out there.

My friend pin trades allot and just recently started and I can roughly say she has dropped around 700 dollars into the hobby. It is a very expensive hobby and if you a seeker of lanyard pins like she is its a becomes a WALKING hobby through all 4 parks LOL

From a hobby stand point its cool it gives people something to interact with between other guest and cast. I have been on the monorail with my friend and worked 4 pin trades just in the time it takes for the monorail to go through all the resorts. I have meet allot of my CM friends through pin trading both in the park and meeting at pin events.

From a marketing stand point I think Disney was wise to get in on it. They got in on a fad that has held true for a long time.

There is a HUGE problem with pinsharks. Beware anyone who goes to Downtown Disney PIN Central and thats what hurts the hobby when people turn it into their own little business.

I have heard sharks buying upwards of 20 pins of the same kind and then turn around and have guest unknowing who want the pin to go into pincentral and buy a bunch of pins that the total cost is more then the pin they want.

I have heard from friends even where people have paid HUNDREDS yes hundred of dollars for a pin set from company d that retails for under 40 bucks and thats before cast discount.

And yes I know of some CM's who themselves are pinsharks which is just sad.

Mind you there are pintraders who are alittle "off" lets say but I have meet the same kind of folks at concerts or standing in line at the post office LOL

just my 2 cents

I personally like the pin trading. I have been collecting for about 3yrs. now. Pins give me and my family a "bond" if you will. All 4 of us(wife & 2 kids. 6 and 3) something to talk and do in between
the rides, walking to the bus. You name it. We all have a theme in mind. For example my wife collects villians. Anyhow, it also gives more reasons to start conversations with complete strangers in line. People start to look at them and ask questions. It is all fun!:sohappy: Though I will agree they are too much money...:(

Orlpassholder, I was waiting for you to chime in on this one. Some of us are even more than a little "off.:. LOL I have even seen people go as far as dressing up Mickey with all sorts of pins on his jacket, but this does not make them odd. LOL

Anyway, my wife and I really enjoy the pin trading. We are probably a little more than $700 into the hobby. We enjoy finding the pins.

What we do is usually buy pins at a big discount from our local Disney store here in town. We take down a bunch of pins to trade with while we are there. We usually have quests to complete. We of course try to collect the lanyard pins, we also try to get pins that are from things we like. (attractions, hotels, characters from movies, etc.).

So, we really shape our collection based on what we "find". We start off with 200 pins that are all the same and at the end of our trip, we have a montage of things that we have assembled over a week or so. It is lots of fun. The only pins we usually buy are the ones that seem extra special, or are unique and we can use them to trade with others for pins we may not be able to "happen upon" during our journeys. It really gives us even more to remember our trip with as each pin has its own story behind it.

We have also met some really great people throguh pin trading, CM's, board posters, etc. As long as you go into it as a hobby and realize it is expensive, it is really enjoyable. I certainly enjoy having pins to look at to remember our trips by rather than a thimble or spoon on the wall.

My view with Orlpassholders gives you $.04 worth of thought!
