Then put a check beside the thread, and then use the dropdown in the bottom right corner to change the action for that thread.

this did not work for what i wanted and i ended up taking every thread i was watching off. There is like a thumb tack icon that i pinned a thread a long time ago....how do i remove this thumb tack??

You can't.

That's a pinned thread. Moderators pin threads in order to keep them at the top of the list. Subjects that are posted that people are likely to want to revisit or that people regularly look for can be pinned to make them easier to find.
