I have been asking for years now if anyone has or saw pictures of big red. She was the mother of little red on KS, when the now nonexistent poacher story was used for the ride. The story was big red had been killed by poachers. Disney had put a dead elephant prop by the smashed open gates to show the mother had been killed, and poached. It was deemed too graphic and removed by the time the ride opened to the general public. For years I looked for pictures, but to no avail. Last night I came across a YouTube video, and took some stills. I figured I would share them! I agree it's a bit graphic.....what do you think?

I have seen it on the actual attraction and I think a little reality never hurt anyone. Many, many people don't know how to treat animals and poaching is just one example.

You know there are people who believe "animals" can't feel pain because they aren't human?

I think they should have kept it, but understand why they removed it. People get triggered so easily these days.

I think they made the right call there, removing that piece of the ride especially after seeing the photos. Disney doesn't need to have the shock value to get the point across that poaching is going on and its harmful. With young kids and being a family park thats promoting entertainment, there should be a point where you don't cross the line. IMHO as it is, they do give guests enough education and information without being too graphic for kids.

I had actually went back and edited my original post, I thought they should've kept it as well, but I think they made the right choice, for their sake

It would have fitted more in the original context and script of the 1998 attraction.

Remember shortly after the guests got shot at.

Honestly, if they were really hoping to educate kids about poaching they should've gone all-in and chopped the tusks off of Big Red's corpse. As is, however, throwing a corpse at an audience who signed up for a fun safari ride (remember, most Disney attractions with potentially frightening elements, such as Dinosaur and Alien Encounter, are completely upfront about that fact on signage) just seems shocking for the sake of being shocking. Sure, Bambi's mom was shot by hunters, but we didn't need to see her body for the moment to be effective.

It's funny you say that about the poaching, because the legend was it was an elephant with a lot of blood and tusks cut off. Now that I actually got to see what it looked like I was a bit baffled that the tusks were still there
