I found these photos of the new Panama Canal locks. It's quite apparent that there is a good deal of work to be done.

One has to wonder if 2014 or even 2015 is a real possibility to be completed. In addition, how many of the big cruise vessels and the new duck tails so many other ships (including the Magic and Wonder) are required to be adding, will not be able to make a Canal passage in the next 2 years...or longer.

Now there are ways the requirement of the duck tail can be delayed or in the case of the Wonder and Magic they could still use the original locks under a special permit. However I don't think they are going to be finished in 2014 or maybe even 2015.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a criticism of the photography, b/c it's honestly not. But I have no idea what I'm looking at. Is the water in the foreground the Canal? What are the raised structures? Are they eventually going to be the walls of the expanded canal? It just looks like an industrial park to me. Sorry to be so ignorant :(

Hi Chuck,

Don't feel ignorant, I only found these photos online. I have been though the Canal a dozen times in my sea days and I really am not 100% sure of where and what I am seeing. I believe this is the new locks on the Pacific side and the water would be the present canal entrance to the pacific locks. The new locks will be partially above ground level, so the cement towers you see are likely the joint sections between the locks and the other supports for the lock walls.

The point being there's a lot of work to be done.

This article is a nice summary of the project

Here's another link to a PanCanal expansion report. I glanced thru some of the pages looking for percentages of completion. I know when DH's projects have reports to the clients they have to give each discipline's overall completion percentage in addition to an overall completion percentage. This is a waaaaay bigger scale but it's still just a project.

In my digging about on the PanCanal expansion report site I found this page that I thought everyone might enjoy playing with. If you click on each link to pictures of a site within the project you can slide the little bars side to side to see before & after shots. It's really neat to see how much they've done. No, it's nowhere close to completion but it's neat to see what's been going on.

Also within all that stuff on the expansion report site are links to live webcams. That might also be cool to watch.

Hey there sweet pea, that is a great site.

Another interesting item is that they are using the small section of original French cut on the Atlantic side.

Thanks for finding this....AKK
