I'm looking to get a digital camera for my upcoming trip to the world and wanted to know if anyone had any experience with taking pictures of MK at night with a digital camera. I would love to have pictures of Main Street and Cinderella Castle at night without the hassle of trying to get high speed film through the x-ray machines at the airport.

This is the description of the camera I'm looking at:

The effective 7.2 Megapixel Super HAD CCD of the Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-W7 digital camera delivers high-quality image control and fine detail, resulting in spectacular digital images. The Super HAD CCD is powerful enough to support larger and more detailed prints while maintaining image clarity. The advanced CCD technology found inside the Cyber-shot® DSC-W7 improves the picture per pixel to capture a more realistic image.

I've has some decent luck using my Kodak EasyShare. I think its more the skill of the photographer as I've seen some nice shot taken with cheap cameras.

We have a few professional photogs as members and they will be better suited to help you than I am. (and they are nice about giving tips)

Not sure if you kno but, there is a digital media section here and you may find some more hints there.

I would recommend an inexpensive tripod. I believe the model I use is a SLIK U600 or U6600, costs about $30, folds down to about 15 inches and has been a champ at helping me capture good night time shots.

I've taken some decent night shots w/ my 4 MP Pentax. I put it on a tripod and set it for night mode. Then I use the remote (which I got on eBay) to take the picture so I don't touch/shake the camera. The foreground might be blury but the object in focus comes out okay.

You can also use the self timer mode to avoid touching the camera when the picture is being taken.

Airport X-Ray machines do not affect 35mm film :)

The best travel tripod on the market (if you want to travl light) is the Ultra-Pod II. It can be set on any surface or can be velcroed to railings, lamp posts, etc. The Gorillapod also looks pretty interesting but probably not as compact to carry.

If you don't want to carry a tripod look for a camera with optical image stabilization (Canon S series, Panasonic Lumix series) and good noise reduction for higher ISO use.

DCResource.com has a list of just about every digital camera on the market with pricing information and reviews on most of them. It is a great resource for camera shopping for a digital point and shoot.

If you are talking pictures of the castle at night, you don't even need a tripod. You can rest your camera on various lightpost pedestals, railings, etc. Any digital camera will generally give you good night shots, you don't necessarily need to spend a ton of money. Many digital cameras come with a nightshot scene selection. Use that. Also try the sports setting if your camera comes with that. It gives some good effects. I have gotten some amazing night shots using both the canon powershot SD550, as well as a digital SLR with no additional accutrement to carry around. THe hottest camera right now, by the way, is the Canon S3 IS with image stabilization. It is flying off the shelves of all the stores. I played with one of these a few weeks back and you get stunning photo results.
