There is a large wooded area just above Space Mountain in the photo (with a retention pond above that).

Does anyone think that area could ever be used as an Expansion of Tomorrowland (or even more Fantasyland)?

If you demolish the Speedway and combine that real estate with that wooded area, it would be a massive piece of property to develop into several large attractions.

I know the retention pond can't be touched, but can that wooded area be used in the future for attractions?

Retention ponds can always be moved. They have done it before.

that really doesnt look like a good amount of land. still would need trees to block sightlines of that road to the east. however, that retention pond would make a good area for photos, with some very detailed attraction near it. maybe a new Log Flume or Matterhorn type ride

The big yellow crane is gone, I guess that's a good sign that they're making progress

Yeah, I noticed that to. Looks like they still have a lot more support structure to do on the front side of the ride but I guess they can use a smaller crane for that.

interesting that u pointed this out, i looked at bing maps (pic is from before the fl expansion but after the bay lake tower) and google earth, (during fl expansion construction) and in both scott's and ge there is a small island with a large tree and mature plants in the middle of that retaining pond, but in bing maps its clearly not there. there's no way this is a natrual occurance, so why would they put an island with foliage in a pond that is nowhere near where a guest could see it? maybe your idea is closer to reality then thought, and id like to see a bigger tl, altho i cant say a matterhorn clone would fit in that genra of themeing.

They didn't just put an island in the pond, if you go to the old dates for pictures on google earth, you can see they expanded the pond sometime during 2010.

That would be an awesome expansion. I would love to see Fantasyland and Tomorrowland expand in that are and I am totally ok with the race track going to do it.

However, what stood out to me was how little would need to be done to fix the rest of old fantasyland. Even just changing the facade of Peter Pan and Small World to look more like the new Rapunzel area or Pinochhio would make a huge difference and that' not that much space. Then that would really keep the tent looking stuff to just the princess hall and philharmagic which are right in the center near the similarly themed carousel.
I think it would be great to change those too but at least those are more in theme.

yeah, eeyore, i thought it looked bigger too. i can see making it bigger but why an island? im liking the idea of a tomorrowland expansion. maybe then they will actually have futuristic rides in it this time. i miss the reality based futuristic rides and attrations they had when i was a kid, if u had wings, mission to mars, etc. they need to bring this kinda quality back

I don't know why they left the island in - but I don't think they "put" an island in the pond (there could be any number of reasons why they did it the way they did). I think it's simply a retention pond that was expanded because of the upcoming construction.

Here are some images of it over the years starting in April 2010; sorry for the poor quality, it was from quite a distance:
