wow. I can't believe they're spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the Fantasyland Expansion and can't spend just a little more money to get this classic ride a better roof than that. That thing is U-G-L-Y. It may actually be uglier than one that it's replacing. It looks like the paint scheme is from 1985.

I was hoping we'd get something beautiful like the roof from Paris. You'd think, with its long site lines from Tomorrowland and through Fantasyland, that they'd want it to be more of a "weenie".

Once again, TDO cheapens out. Wasn't the one in the concept art for the expansion patterned after DPL's version? Seriously, what does it take to get a park manager to open his wallet and give you what was proposed in the sketches?

actually the edges of the roof still look unfinished and unpainted in those pictures. If you look at the original concept art for the expansion, the roof was more or less the same solid design but has pointy arch shape ends all around the outer extremes. It still MIGHT be possible that we get some of those elements after all.

This

From looking at the FLE original concept art, the roof they are currently finishing looks closer to that than it does to DLP. It's just missing an overlay with a pointy outcropping.

Also, I seem to remember Lee or Raven (or one of the insiders) mentioning a while ago in one of the FLE threads that they had a few ways they could go with the new roof here, one would give away the new theming to the new areas, the other wouldn't. While in no way do I have any inside info, or real construction knowledge, I'd think that they would easily be able to overlay a more highly themed roof on the current structure without too much issue. Maybe they just dont want to re-theme this until the FLE in this area is closer to fruition?

Just throwing out an idea or two.

It's been stated here several times that Florida's rain is mineral-rich, which would cause the glass to get dirty constantly, just like the glass pyramids at Imagination. Heck, they actually have halfway decent maintenance at EPCOT and they still don't clean them regularly. Plus, there are tall trees in the teacups area that wouldn't let sunlight in like it does at DLP, and with all of the leaves, you're in for one dirty glass roof. And quite frankly, I'd enjoy a freshly painted and clean roof rather than a glass one that they wouldn't bother to clean.

Oh good point. The could very well be waiting till closer to the opening of FLE to add the outcroppings. Would be an interesting way of keeping the ultimate theming details under wraps. Afterall, those outcroppings would just be aluminum sheeting and some kind of support...it wouldn't take a lengthy closure to add them in later.

What you have to remember is that many people wanted the DLP roof regardless of the facts.

As some point in this refurbishment, the internet decided that anything less than the DLP roof would be unacceptable, even though there was never any indication that's what was coming.

So even though it was never promised, designed, or alluded to now people are disappointed and calling TDO cheap.

The next person to blurt out another unnecessary TDO slam will be whacked on the noggin with a two-by-four!

Your right, I didn't take into consideration the Florida elements and the impact they would have on a glass roof, mouth meet foot. :D

I thought Lee or Raven mentioned that this roof change was necessary because of some safety issue, but that a different roof matching with the FLE was coming down the road.

Please don't quote me on this, I just thought I remember reading that months ago...

They were assuming we might get a new one. I highly DOUBT we will at this point. Not with all they did with this one. They pretty much rebuilt the entire thing. No way they would rebuild this one just to tear it down.

But if (and this is a big if) they built it so the structural components could be kept with a newly themed "cover" added over the top, I could see that as a potential. Most likely not, yes, I agree, but if the structural elements needed to be rebuilt sooner rather than later, maybe they decided to do something cheap for now, and save the final "theme change" until Dumbo-land / Fantasyland Forrest is closer to completion?

I dont have a big problem with the current roof design, but would agree with most that a design more closely themed to the FLE would be better. I guess I'm just hopeful that it isn't off the table.
