"It's the Future!" (In 1940s style radio announcer voice.)
NextGen is everywhere including in schools with the new content standards for all the grade levels! I just finished a workshop about NextGen standards today! What a headache!:( But, we must be on board because it is the way of the future!;) We go on to discover new frontiers.... We go on moving forward...:D

Making it easier to get your money.

What a curious attitude to have.

You could choose to spend all day throwing that "making its easier to get your money" phrase around. I think it's kind of sad to see the world this way.

I think the real reason Disney is investing in the RFID readers is because in the near future magnetic strips will be phased out of credit cards. The strips are unreliable and can be demagnetized. There is also wear on them from swiping in machines. Within 5 years, I bet almost all merchants will have RFID readers. This is an industry trend that's coming...not a plot by Disney to "get your money".

Disney offers products that are for sale. You can choose to buy them if you like. No one from Disney is picking your pocket or trying to trick you or steal from you.

I doubt that there will be a huge time savings, but I have found that RFID tend to be more reliable than the magnetic strips. 1 wave is much better that ten swipes followed by entering a card manually. More than anything I think that it is just one piece of the puzzle in getting rid of the magnetic stripes entirely and going to a 100% RFID system.

I will miss the tricks of the trade to make cards and checks work. Wrap the card in a plastic bag so it will pickup the swipe. A little moisture on the check so it will read, good times. I agree that at least a pin code along with the RFID would be a good idea. I do not want to be near the counter looking at impulse item and it read my card by mistake. I know people say these things have a short range but I have seen our barcode scanners pickup codes that are well out of range.

Oh whatever. This is not disney investing in custom terminals to ensure their POS terminals work! A vendor would GIVE Disney the terminals in return for their business.

There are already industry systems available (the prementioned 'Touch n Go' and others). This isn't a 'necessity' to keep with the industry. What a line...

I'm just amazed that someone who earlier this week had to "look up RFID" is now suddenly an expert on the industry as a whole?

RFID chips have been in some credit cards and in some readers for nearly a decade now. Next time you are in a store look for sometime like this on the credit card machine.

If you see something like this you have found and RFID reader.

RFID chips are superior to magnetic strips in pretty much any way save for security. That security risk is why magnetic strips still exist and probably will for quite some time.

That is true of Disney.

Leave that to the corn.

Welcome to the Magic Kingdom, John Anderton. You look like you could use a churro right now.

Ha, it's funny you bring this up. I was watching this just the other night with my wife, and we were laughing about walking into MouseGear and having a hologram pop up to greet us and ask us how our retro Epcot Tees were working out.

I have been using my phone more and more at checkouts. Anytime you see that logo you can use a device equipped with an NFC chip to use it. Now google wallet will let you link any card you have so you can just swipe your phone. You have to put a pin in to use it but it is super handy. You can also use it to redeem coupons and offers. People do look at me weird when I use it but that's only because they aren't used to having new features on their iphones lately. Its supposed to be coming to the next iphone but it will rely on itunes and I'm sure it will be restricted to certain credit cards that buy into the apple tax.

I also bought a bunch of nfc tags that I can program and leave where I want to switch modes. For example I get to my car and I swipe my phone to a tag and it enables the gps and launches car mode. I have on my night stand that I put my phone down for the night and it triggers sleep mode. I can program one with four square check in so if for example I see one at Five guys, i touch my phone to it and it can check in to that location.

Its super fun technology and I hope disney utilizes it to its fullest.

It may be curious but it is the way any major corporation thinks. How do we make it easier for the customer to separate themselves from their money in their wallet. The difference between pulling green backs out and pulling a card out and swiping it makes it easier. The customer may not think of the purchase as much when they are just running plastic over a Mickey reader. When they are counting out $20s they might second guess their decision.I don't think Disney is trying to rip anyone off. I literally mean they are trying to make the act of spending money easier.

I don't disagree that RFID is the way things are heading, i work in the RFID industry and it is a 7.5 Billion dollar a year industry (inn the US alone) and getting bigger every year. This type of RFID is just scratching the surface of the technology. There are some very cool things on the horizon for WDW and the parks if they dive deeper into this tech.

hrmm.. $50 limit for non-PIN transactions. Interesting.. I would have thought it be lower honestly, but Disney must be trusting :)

Actually Home Depot does not require a signature or a pin. A lot of other places are the same way. So, $50 or less is no suprise.

Another fan site had an interesting article on the RFID technology and WDW, with guestimates on how much it will save them just by keeping people from cheating with the re-use of the refillable mugs. Not sure how accurate the numbers are but the theory makes sense.

I read the article, and at first glance I'd guess that the numbers are a little high. I don't doubt for a second though that Disney is saving money in the long run by doing this.
