Pets at DVC Properties...

I've been wondering this long and hard; but I seem to be unable to find a response anywhere on the net... So here it is...

Are Pet rules any different on DVC properties than they are on regular Disney resorts? That being, can I bring my pet dog with me to the resort?

Any information would be VERY appreciated, as this may be a key point on my decision to buy or not on DVC..

Thanks,

Awww...

They should have a pet resort... for people who like to vacation with their puppies and kitties and such...

With a special doggie pool for doggies to swim in...

:lookaroun

I know it could never happen and it's an insurance nightmare but it's a really nice thought. :)

So much for "The comforts of home"...

How can they give me the comforts of home, if I have to leave one of the members of our family behind... Is it really so hard to come up with a policy to allow pets in some of the rooms?

(Denis Miller tone of voice) And.. I don't want to get on a rant here... but shouldn't Disney make an effort to provide families with pets an alternative, other than the Kennels? Is it too hard to do what many other hotels do?

Anyhow... Just venting...

Thanks for the responses...

They could also make WDW free, house the entire population of a small war torn country, and give all of us $50, but that's not going to happen either.

WDW is a business which is good at customer service - but knows better than to cater to every persons individual whim.

See... those things are not services you'll come to expect at other hotels... I'm not asking Disney to end World hunger, just to do what many other hotels do... Allow families to bring their pets... even if it is on a specific resort... just a few rooms... very strick cleaning policies.. whatever.. but have something... not just "leave your pet at the kennel".

For me my dog is a part of our family... We never leave him behind, no matter where we go... To the point that this was the remaining deal braking point left, on our decision to purchase or not at DVC...

Well... off to other resort I guess... somehow I honestly though that at the DVC properties it would be different... based on the concept of a "home away from home" thing...

The basic premise of a timeshare is that other people own your home away from home too.

I don't want your doggy dander!

As much as you may feel your dog is part of your family, there are plenty of other people who feel that dogs are mindless creatures, occasionally an entree in certain cultures, and no more cute and cuddly than most other livestock. This is not my opinion, but you might want to take the rest of the world's view into consideration rather than feeling like you've been slighted.

For the record, several resorts do not allow pets.

I guess I don't understand, but what would you do with your pet while you're at the parks all day? Just leave them in a resort room? That doesn't seem fair to the pet. I'd much rather my pet be with people I trust at our local pet boarding 'pet hotel' where they are part of an extended family. My dog LOVES it there and would not want to be couped up in a carry cage in a room.

Plus, my experience with hotels that allow pets has always been negative.

How long have you known me...?

I don't like to be "harsh" to anyone, but when folks come to the boards baiting for sympathy over a question like this, one that has been debated (read: whined about) a million times before, I'll give it to them straight.

This has very little if anything to do with insurance liability. The reasons Disney does not and will not allow pets in their resorts are upkeep and cleaning costs and health issues.

Face it...even at home pets can make messes and can cause damage to carpet and furniture. Put them in a strange environment and leave them alone while you have fun at the parks and what is going to happen?

I personally don't want my dues going up more just to replace carpet and furniture because little Scruffy got scared and made a mess on the bedroom carpet or chewed up a couch.

The are also a number of people who are allergic to pet dander and the amount of cleaning required to prevent problems would be expensive.

I have 3 dogs and a cat...I love them dearly, but I'd never take them on vacation with me. I feel that it would be cruel to leave them alone all day....that's why I leave them at home in a kennel.

Nice people skills merf...you're a CM, huh?

I really need to contact Disney about their training.

Edit!
Found a better retort:

Why don't you use your time posting another "exciting" Jim Hill rumor rather than trying to start a fight with me?

I understand that it's hard to leave your pet at home when you go away, especially if you go away for an extended period of time, put think about it from your pet's point of view for a minute.

You get put into a cage, then onto a plane or car for hours. Then you get to this strange place, where everything smells different, everyone around you is new, and all these little people want to touch you. The only familair thing is your family. THEN, your family goes out and leaves you alone in this strange villa for hours on end. You have no idea where you are and you have no idea if your family is coming back.

Does that sound like fun to you? It doesn't to me. I know it's easier for us to have our pets with us (I sleep much better with my cat at my feet) but they feel better in comfortable surroundings, with people near them.

Merf - The only reason I asked the question, was because I could not find any responses using the search function of the forum. Trust me, I'm a moderator at several sites related to my profession, and I certainly want people to use the search before asking; but if there is nothing to be found, then the question is fair...

Thanks all for the information...

cesarcabrera, Welcome to WDWmagic! Your question was a good question. I do tend to agree that pets don't belong in the resort and DVC rooms based on the potentail damage to the rooms and allgery effects for other guests. I also agree that WDW is not pet friendly, so even if you can have them in your room, you would have to kennel them during the day.

If this is make or brake you might want to consider looking into a vacation home that allows pets (if many do.)

My DH says he is pretty sure that FW now allows pets in your own trailer trailer or camp site. (not the FWH.) Something to consider.

mousermerf, while some members of this board know you well, many are new and do not. Please allow them the courtesty of being polite. If answering the same questions bugs you, don't. No one said you have to answer every post.

Actually, this could be a good business decision for Disney. Consider that Saratoga Springs and Old Key West resorts are comprised of many individual buildings.

At either resort, they could dedicate one building for pets, and put restrictions on where they could walk them, etc. Charge $30 (or whatever) a night in addition to the points for cleaning costs, etc., and have people be financially responsible for any extra cleaning.

Disney certainly has the resources to research this to see if it would be a popular choice. Personally, I wouldn't bring a pet to WDW, but I know many people would.

That's a good point, Rick. It would be easier to do something like that in OKW or SS versus BCV or VWL. And it's a good way to make sure that only people who bring pets pay extra. I still feel bad for the animals that would be left alone all day in a strange place though. That's when animals tend to get nervous and destroy things because they panic. But, I'm a real bleeding heart for animals. If they allowed dogs at a hotel, I'd probably spend most of the day checking out the dogs instead of going to the parks!

On another note, cesarcabrera, I'm pretty sure that Fort Wilderness does allow pets at the campsites.
