Disney released a moving poster for Pete's Dragon.

At first I didn't notice Elliot's face, but second time around I got creeped out because to me he looked a bit scary...

*Sigh* :( Neither did I. To me, the old, nostalgic New England fishing village was what gave the original it's charm. Well, that and some pretty darn good musical numbers. I'll remain hopeful though that this remake will deliver, and stay true to the classic. But if it turns out that The Gogans or Doc Terminus were simply "misunderstood" (here's looking at you, live-action Maleficent debacle), then I'm giving up on modern remakes of classic stories once & for all.

I'm wondering if this is a totally new story that just has another kid named Pete. He was in the woods for 6 years and he doesn't look much older then 10.

It's only a trailer, but my initial reaction is another Disney classic from my childhood is about to be tarnished like what Race to Witch Mountain did to Escape to Witch Mountain.

The original movie will always be there. You can just pretend the new one doesn't exist if you like. That's what we do with Ep. 1,2 and 3 of Star Wars.

LOL. Did you notice they seemed to have done the same thing in the symphony set during the Disneyland 60 special last night? They had scenes from the original trilogy and the new movie. I did not see any from the prequels.

As for "Pete's Dragon," I noticed the same thing that some are saying here: It seems that they have completely ditched the original except for the concept of a boy and his dragon friend (who could disappear). The original was in a coastal New England type of setting with a lighthouse and the "Candle on the Water" as a central theme (a beacon helping us stay centered, which transferred to the dragon's relationship to Pete also). This one, however, seems to be set in the mountains, and would hardly seem to have a place for a lighthouse. Can't say for sure, but it seems like it will be completely different, and likely will not have that very beautiful song fit in.

I also remember the movie as being very quaint, and pleasant. Like everything else Hollywood and Disney seem to make these days, it looks like this one will be more about CGI and over-the-top effects than story. I hope that is not the case.

Plot breakdown and cast -

Disney's Pete's Dragon is a reimagining of the studio's cherished family film. The story follows the adventures of a boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon. The movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford. Pete's Dragon also stars Oakes Fegley as Pete, along with Wes Bentley, Karl Urban and Oona Laurence. The film, which is directed by David Lowery, is written by David Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field.

Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete's descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham's stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.
