Permits Filed for Phase 2

I'm starting a new thread since this is about as exciting as FLE news gets these days.

Construction filed the permits today for Phase 2 of the Fantasyland Expansion.

They are:

Speedway: Track Realignment
Toontown: Barricades
FLE Phase 2: Site Development - Dumbo Area

Not that there were many doubts, but this seems to solidify the fact that Dumbo 2.0 will be located at the north end of the Speedway, since re-routing the track is part of the work.

And apparently they're going to build some elaborate barricades in front of Toontown, since they filed a specific permit just for that work. They've never filed permits for construction walls, so they must actually be building something to "block" Toontown. Perhaps they're not quite ready to replace it, just shut it down.

I find it odd that they haven't listed the Speedway as being closed anytime in the near future. If Toontown is closing on Feb 13 (or whenever), I would think they'd need to close the Speedway when they start the "Site Development" since one depends on the other.

We're awfully close to February for them to have not listed it as "closed for refurbishment" yet.

EDIT: Just saw Steve's news article on the home page about the "temporary lane closures".

Nice work! Thanks! This is indeed big news (for now!)

Wow, they're really bumping up against the speedway, aren't they?

This is gonna be interesting!

"Temporary lane closures" will make it much more like driving on a real highway! They will end up having to have Tomorrow Land Speedway traffic reports. ;)

perhaps just some of the lanes are going to be rerouted and they all won't be following the exact same route anymore. Sounds like a possible page out of the Autopia book...which I am completely OK with. :king:

Actually if anyone has the blueprint that shows Dumbo by the raceway I would appreciate it if you could post it here. Thanks. :king:

I'm pretty sure you're still thinking of the one that was photoshopped. I have the original site plans that showed the entire original project, and it shows Dumbo up in Toontown, behind LM. The first time I ever saw Dumbo by the Speedway was on the model (or perhaps the rendering, I forget).

Exactly.
They never released any prints that showed Dumbo by the Speedway. The only ones seen here were fan-made, and whoever made them made it appear as though the Speedway would be changing.

I do have the revised prints showing that area, and just looked at them. Dumbo fits nicely in the little nook there, and the Speedway looks unchanged.
Possibly what we are hearing about with Speedway is temporary while the Dumbo construction is going on.
(I don't have a program that will let me do an overlay to be sure, so I'm just eye-balling it. Speedway looks the same.)

BTW- I miss the old permits that had plans/diagrams.

The barricades are interesting. Could be good or bad. They're not one of those "temporary" thing, are they? :lookaroun

As edward pointed out in the original post, there have never been construction permits for construction walls before, so this is likely something more substantial.

I wonder if the baricades are for along the train tracks to block the view of construction.

Also, I doubt the Speedway is moving its tracks, as the plan would be to close the ride. I do place money on the outer lanes being closed as construction takes place near the tracks. Sounds like the Dumbo Circus area really is going to bump up right against the speedway. Even more so than TT does now.

I just took a look at the picture of the model and compared it to the Google Earth view of the Speedway and there is a difference between these. In the current Speedway before the last turn before the unload area the track curves a little bit to the right (towards where Dumbo is going to be) before curving back left. The curve to the right doesn't show up in the model. Of course it's possible the whoever built the model just left out this detail, but maybe they are taking out that little curve to make a bit more room for Dumbo.

Good point about the lane closures just being a temporary thing due to proximity to construction. It just seems so illogical to move a tiny portion of the speedway tracks when they could just scoot Dumbo a few feet north. There's plenty of room there, and I give the designers a tiny bit more credit than "Oh crap, we drew Dumbo here and now we have to move 60 feet of speedway track by 3 feet. Oh well, it's in ink, we can't change it now."

I too wish these permits had come with sketches.

Hard to say. Like I mentioned before, I've never seen a permit for their famous construction walls, so it's got to be something more substantial. Something that actually causes changes to the property (thus requiring a permit).

I wonder if the baricades are for along the train tracks to block the view of construction.

Makes sense that they'd have walls along the north end of the Speedway. Maybe that's why they're closing lanes - so they can set some walls on the actual track (perhaps the outside 2 lanes) in order to give them construction access all the way up to the north edge of the track. This makes a lot more sense.

I just took a look at the picture of the model and compared it to the Google Earth view of the Speedway and there is a difference between these. I agree with what you're saying. The model shows a different track layout than what's there currently, in the last turn. Perhaps it's just "artistic license" on the part of the model makers.

I remember a post (Raven maybe?) mentioning the last loop of the speedway would be eliminated (spurning a whole thread drift on eliminating the speedway altogether) - I guess this falls into that plan. I still don't get the whole "temporary lane closure" - there's a track so it's not like we can just merge over!

Exactly. If they're re-routing anything, the ride will have to close. They can't scoot one lane without scooting all of them.

Looking at all the pieces, seems most logical that they're just taking over a lane or two so they can put up a fence on the pavement and open up the entire grassy area to construction.
