Just a question.. WHat are the price ranges for Pentium 4 Processors? Not the computers that have them.. The Processor only.. I want to buy a 4 and slip it into my computer.. 550$? 150$?

Thanks!

Before you do anything, you need to find out if a Pentium4 is compatible with your motherboard. Motherboard's have limitations on the speed of the processor & type of processor.

If you have to buy a new motherboard to upgrade, I would suggest buying an ECS K725A (a very good motherboard, and it is only $80) and going with an AMD Athlon XP. They really aren't any slower than a Pentium 4, and they also cost half as much (I bought what would be the equivilent of a 2.2 GHZ Pentium 4 for only $130).

Then again, if you can wait, you may just want to upgrade later this year with AMD's Clawhammer processors hit the market.

you definetly do not want a pentium 4. they are trash. i highly reccomend that you get a AMD Athlon XP. rightn ow, i am using an athlon xp 1900 (1.6 ghz) in my main computer. you can get that one for $130. the XPs overclock like a champ too. here is the Athlon page at newegg.com (i use them for all my big hardware orders) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=226&manufactory=1028&DEPA=1

just make sure that your motherboard can support whatever CPU you get. if you do need a new motherboard, you can pick on up for under a hundred bucks.

(finally, someone wants to talk about computer hardware!!)

I've got an 1800+, you got any idea on how well these overclock?

BTW, if you really want to overclock a piece of hardware to ungodly levels, get a GeForce 4 TI4200. It actually scared me when my bar when all the way across the slider...

You're screwed, buy a new motherboard and get an AMD. You'll be able to keep Windows 98 though (but you will have to format your HD and reinstall everything from scratch, because Windows sucks).

We can't really tell without opening up your computer and looking for ourselves. As said above, go for a processor/motherboard combo... preferably an Athlon XP, but thats your choice.

I have a pent 3 1.2 ghz. proccessor,if you want to upgrade to a pent 4 you will also have to buy a new mother board! If you decide to get a gforce card DO NOT,I repeat DO NOT get any motherboard with a VIA chipset! Because NVIDIA and VIA are not compatible.
