Ok, bear with me here..Having only been in July, and planning for October in 2015.. Is there a huge difference..Not Halloween week..( Oct 10th till 22nd ) ..Just curious..;)
I'm not looking at a calendar, but I think you run into Columbus Day weekend. Crowded, but maybe not as crazy as the fourth. I've never done October, but I can tell you, at least you won't melt!

It's less crowded you won't melt but the park hours are much shorter and there are more rides down for refurbs. Happy planning. There's always an upside and a downside to everything! xoxo

That's one of the drawbacks of going in October. It tends to be a slower season but you don't get as many hours in parks. Is Columbus weekend even a big deal? Few people get the day off from work and the kids are usually in school now a days.

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
We always prefer going from Oct-Dec. Less crowded, not steaming hot, oh and Food and Wine Fest or Holiday time inbetween Thanksging and Christmas is just magical! Park hour are less but being its not as crowded you don't need a park o be open until 3am! Lol. MK is open still until 12 some nights , and also MK, Epcot, and HS have extra magic hours at night some nights so we take advantage of those being the parks are not open as late as in the summer. Also we never noticed that many refurbs going on that affected us much at all. :)

We have been at different times but our last 3 and this year it is Oct for us.
The weather is good, yes hot compared to Scotland! The crowds are less, Halloween decorations are up and MNSSHP is so much fun. It is half term for our schools up here, they have 2 weeks "Tattie Holidays". The prices are good because it isn't UK half term.
The only down side for us is bumping in to so many people we know, DS school only has 50 pupils (39 families) 4 of them will be there at the same time as us, and one family are on the same out bound flights!!
But honestly its the best time ever!
