Yeh,there's ups & downs I suppose. We book our vacation as a package.Resort,Flights, transfers from Sanford,Park tickets & free DDP.So the total for the three of us in July staying at a moderate is round about $6.500. Thats 14 nights.Ive looked at booking flights separate, then booking Disney resort via Disney web, then taxi from Sanford, but it works out about the same.

A base ticket only lets you into the "major" gates, one park per day. Adding hopping lets you get into multiple "major" gates each day. To get entrance to a "minor" gate, you would need to add WP&M to your base ticket. Even if you have hopping, going to multiple "minor" gates in the same day uses a new WP&M credit for each "minor" gate you go to.

The only exception to this would be some of the tickets sold to international tourists as part of a length of stay package.

Major gate = MK, DHS, Epcot, AK. Minor gate = TL, BB, DQ, and one of the golf courses (don't remember which but you can play 9 holes)

There you go..Another unbelievable fact Ive learnt.I'am beginning to think the UK 14 day ( for the price of 7 ) is a bargain. We can hop till we bop for 14 days & nights for around $360 ;)
That's such a great price. We can only buy 10 days. After that, you start over. Our Magic Your Way ticket only includes the four main parks. The water parks and hoppers are extra. We always pay for the hopper, but never the water parks. We can do that close to home. We used to be able to get 14 day tickets, but now only 10.

So here's a definitive answer for the OP (to remove any possible confusion the side discussion about the special UK-resident tickets might have caused)

Regardless of whether the tickets you bought are Base Magic Your Way Tickets or tickets that include the Park Hopper option, days on those tickets cannot be used for entrance to a water park. You will either have to buy single-day water park tickets or add the Water Parks & More option onto your existing tickets when you get down there. *But*, if you're only going to the water park for one day, the single-day ticket is the cheaper option. Adding the WP&M option would get you *five* admissions to the water parks, DisneyQuest, etc.

$52.00 for a one day admission to one water park

or

$57.00 for the Water Parks and More option
(which for a 5 day base ticket would give you an additional 5 days admission to Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, DisneyQuest, Disney’s Oak Trail golf course, or ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.)

prices do not include sales tax

With the ages of your boys, you may want to wait a few years to hit the water parks. Most of the slides are too big for them to enjoy and I would be worried about my kids in a lot of the water elements there.
