Park Attendences

MK was the #1 theme park visited with 14.7 over the past year. However attendence was down 5%.

Disneyland was #2 with 12.7, up 3%.

Epcot was 3, with 8.3, down 8%.
MGM was 4, with 8 million, down 4%.
AK was 5, with 7.3, down 6%.

Universal Studios was 6, with 6.9 million, down 6%.
IOA was 7 with 6.1, up 10%. Halloween Horror Nights was cited as a reason for the growth in attendence.

SeaWorld was 9, with 5 million.

A few random thoughts:

One figure should be corrected, because according to the 2001 estimates the Magic Kingdom drew 14.7 million. A 5% drop would cause attendance to fall to 14 million even, which has been reported by several other news agencies.

Given what I have heard over the year, I would pin AK's number at around the 6.9 million range.

It is interesting to see that while Universal Studios recieved another kick in the shins in terms of attendance, the resort as a whole was actually able to attract more people over last year.

Very good news to see the 2 parks that people constantly like to critisize, Epcot and AK, ahead of both Universal parks. :D

Disney's parks are always ahead of the rest because they get the return visitors (like me) that most places do not. Also, Disney's parks are for everyone. There is very little for a young child to do at IOA outside of Suess Landing.

Normally us pond jumpers attempt to visit both Disney and Universal parks as well as sea world, though I must admit that Its 2 days max at Universal for me in a 14 day trip. Though I have a work mate who visited this summer and didnt "do" Disney but went to Daytona Kennedy and the Everglades, he loved it but said he really regretted it but will be going next summer. Biggest regret not visiting Animal Kingdom, so I guess we all have our reasons. I couldnt imagine going and not spending max time in the parks.

>>>Very good news to see the 2 parks that people constantly like to critisize, Epcot and AK, ahead of both Universal parks.<<<

The ONLY reason they are ahead of Universal's parks is because they are throwaways on the multi-day hoppers and APs. I would also peg AK at around the 7 million range, and not the 7.3 million that AB estimated.

AB also estimated that DCA got 4.7 million visitors this year, which is completely off the mark and does not even correlate with Disney's quarterly reports.

Not to be rude, but what makes you think your estimates are correct, I mean who is probably going to be more correct? The Orlando Sentinel, where writers need to back their stories up with credible figures and sources or some guy just spouting off numbers on a web site...Why don't you tell us why you say its 7 million and not 7.3? Are you a Disney executive or work in the financial dept?...again not to be rude but it seems some people like to bash disney not matter what....While I don't think Disney is perfect, they have given millions of people some much joy (me included) and I like when their is good news to report.....Oh and by the way I went to HHN at IOA one night and it was so incredibly crowded..I mean 20 minute waits for the bathroom...so I guess a good way to boast attendence is to tell people that your selling tickets for a "special event" and that there is a limited number of tickets and then limit the tickets to about 50,000....

Thanks Turkey Leg Boy!

When I'm in Orlando, I usually go to sea world for a day and/or Universal for a day. I typically stop at Magic Kingdom at least twice during the week. Would that increase MK's relative numbers?

The Sentinel is using numbers from Amusement Business.

Disney doesn't release attendence numbers. Pheneix's numbers could be as accurate or more accurate as Amusement Business. Their numbers are just estimates too.

HHN is a "special event", just like Disney's Halloween Party. There are limited number of tickets, dates. That didn't seem to help MK's numbers.

Right... I was about this say this whole report is (as far as WDW's numbers go) based on assumpitions and rough estimates. :)

You know saying that epcot an ak are throwaways is a pretty ignorant comment...There are many people who enjoy both parks and if epcot were a throwaway and mk and mgm were not wouldnt epcots attendence be lower than mgms.........and i have been to all the orlando parks many times and trust me there are many reasons why epcot and ak are ahead of universal..1. variety of attractions... 2. better service...3. better resturants...and these are just a few.........no offense but your comment that people only go to epcot and ak is to use up there passes is really dumb.....

>>>mgm were not wouldnt epcots attendence be lower than mgms<<<

It is, and has been for several months now. Heck, even in AB's estimates only 300,000 people seperated the two.

>>>i have been to all the orlando parks many times and trust me there are many reasons why epcot and ak are ahead of universal<<<

Maybe the fact that they are both in the same resort with the #1 park in the world has something to do with it too.

Really? According to who? And 300,000 is still a decent number of people

bvolguards I find your comments rude!
Everybody has differant likes and dislikes,I for one can`t stand AK! I went there and was bored out of my mind!
I`d rather go to the Cleveland Zoo,then go back to AK!After all Ak is just a glorified ZOO!

That's what I thought the first time I visted the park, but my first impression was wrong. IMO AK has a lot over any zoo I've been to (with the possible exception of the San Diego zoo and animal park). We found the trails for Africa and Asia really interesting. Now my wife refuses to go to the gorilla exhibit at the Brookfield Zoo (which used to be touted as a great habitat for them) because the gorillas there look sad and lifeless compared to the ones at AK. AK still has a long way to go, but its enjoyable if you take the time to explore it more.

I've always wondered, why is it that when people on a DISNEY board talk about how much they like WDW more than Universal or whatever, there are always those who jump in to assure them that Disney is going down the toilet?
Is it surprising to see people here who enjoy Disney parks? I thought that was the intent of the site. I'm really curious. Maybe some folks enjoy the positive things about WDW once in a while.

I was never impressed with Universal, so I see it as the Pepsi to Disney's Coke. I don't mind if people really like Universal parks, but I'm not going to go to a Universal board to argue with them about why Disney is better for me.
