Pal Mickey

Last year we purchased a Pal Mickey. I now see they have a new one available. Does anyone know if ours from last year will still work once we "reactivate" him in the proper areas. We are getting ready to pack for our trip next week and if he's not going to work...I won't pack him.
Thanks so much!

He will still work. You just won't have the new content loaded into the newer version.

Make sure you reactivate him when you get there. My Pal Mickey needed it. He wasn't picking up the signal at the front gates. After the reactivation he worked great!

Pal Mickey - update

On our last trip (September 05), we had just pruchased the newer version of Pal Mickey. While going thru the gates at Magic Kingdon, a CM had asked if we had updated our Pal Mickey. Since we had just bought him we did not need to to, but seeing that DW changes/ updates the parks yearly, its easy for Mickey to become "outdated". Another cast member I had been talking to , told me that she had hers updated/replace because he had ceased to work. We never pursued the question as to where or how we can get him updated. but it seems likely that we can. Try the major stores? or check in with Town Hall? I certainly would like to know too!

There is an article referenced that gives a lot of info about PAL Mickey. He has pre-loaded phrases that are triggered. Version 1.0 will not have the same content as 2.0 (Happiest Celebration on Earth info for example).

If he stops working then try changing the batteries, they seem to die quickly.

How many of what type battery does he use? I was thinking of buying a Pal during my next trip, but if the batteries included are unreliable then perhaps I'll bring a set from home. This would be more convenient and undoubtedly cheaper:D .

I'm almost positive it's two AA batteries. To be honest, I've never changed my 1.0 Pal's batteries. I took him to the parks over a dozen times. Other people have had bad battery problems and I've known some owners to take the Pal to one of the Pal Mickey locations and have them change the batteries for them.

How does one go about getting Mickey updated? Is there extra cost involved and if so how much? I ask because I've been thinking of getting one off Ebay, but don't want to buy one and have to have it updated at a cost that exceeds what I could have purchased it for in the park in the first place. Thanks for your help.

Pal Mickey isn't updateable in the way you mean. All the phrases he can say are pre-programmed within the plush. Triggers throughout the park can signal those phrases to be said, but NO NEW ONES WILL BE DOWNLOADED. The only things that are "updated" are signals he picks up daily that tell him when to announce parades/fireworks.

The 1.0 version of Pal Mickey will continue to work just fine. However, he will only be able to discuss things that he was programmed for. (i.e. No discussion of Sitch or Soarin! or Expidition Everest for example because those attractions did not exist when the original was programmed.)

The new ("Happiest Celebration on Earth") version has updated content, new jokes, and a sing-along feature that was not present in the original. If you want the newest version and new content, you have to buy the new one currently selling in the park. If however, you simply want to get one to see what it's like (and don't need the latest content/version) and not spend $65 on the new one, you can find the originals pretty cheap on ebay these days.

I wasn't able to find the HCOE Mickey when I last looked on ebay, but I'll keep an eye out for them. And what is the deal with "reactivating" is this like an update (with new info) or just readjusting it to the triggers in the park so to speak? Thanks for the information. Edit note: checked again and found a couple, thanks for the hint

Sure people are reselling the new ones on ebay but you're better off simply buying him direct from the park when you're there. This way it ensures you get one new and unused and you don't pay extra in shipping and such for him.

No, he does not update. When he enters the park, he simply receives a signal that let's him identify which park he is in.

In fact, the original version was able to be "reset" by CM's. They could put him in a drawer with an infrared device which would reboot his system. This way, if he were confused or stating the wrong messages, it would correct it. The new version doesn't have that capability; if he gets confused and can not re-establish proper signals, you have to trade in the entire plush for a new one. So technically, there's even less two-way interaction when it comes to signals with the second.

Rumors continue to abound that in coming years and upcoming versions, two-way signals and downloading of new phrases will be made possible, but right now, neither 1.0 nor Happiest Celebration on Earth edition have the ability to do so.

I have one of the originals that works great but never been in the park... do i need to get him rebooted.. or should he recognize where he is?
When you go in the park, if he isn't giving the right info, or isn't giving any info (just jokes) you can easily have him reset. (Any of the places that sell him can do it; like the Main Street Cinema for example) No worries. He should pick up automatically when he comes in but it happens sometimes that they don't. I had a problem once where he didn't seem to "get" we were in MK but well over a dozen other times without a single problem. (Including park hopping within the same day.) :)

You're welcome!

And yeah, you can find the originals for $20-25 brand new on ebay these days. They also had them on clearance at some of the Disney outlets apparently earlier this year. :)
