Pal Mickey

We bought a Pal Mickey when they first came out and although it was a little on the expensive side, we decided we just HAD to have one.

At first we Loved him, but when we took him back the next trip, he was basically just an annoyance to carry around. He's hard to hear unless he's right up near your ear and clipping and unclipping him got to be a pain.

The last trip we took our oldest daughter with us and thought she'ld get a kick out of Pal Mickey, but after about a half hour of lugging him around she got tired of him.

He probably won't be going back with us again anytime soon.

Having been to WDW every year for the last 18 years, we pretty much know our way around the parks so Pal Mickey isn't really needed.

Having said all that I suggest you buy one just to own one. He also plays games and tell jokes so kids back home can play witn him interactively.

We bought a pal mickey and enjoyed it. We could hear him fine during our stay and took him to all the parks. He was helpful when the lines at popular attractions were not very long. Well worth the money.

Does this mean that he will tell you when the lines are acutally short? or is it just a guess/pre-recorded message that he will blurt out any old time?!?

great buy

I have 3 Pal Mickeys, the original from two years ago, the 50th anniversary edition from last year, and although we didn't make it down this winter, bought the sorcerer mickey online. We absolutely love him. It's fun to have, even if it is a bit expensive. He's one thing we like to bring home with us each visit as a souvenier, and our daughter loved him last year. I'm not into the outfits they have, but would look to buy each new edition, especially if they are special/limited editions like the anniversary and the sorcerer mickeys.

His jokes are lame, but if you are in the Disney spirit, they are fun. He updates you on where you can find certain characters or when parade times are. I think he also mentioned which lines were short, but if you use fastpass, it doesn't quite matter. The random facts about the different themed areas are always nice to hear.

Pal Mickey for rent?

I read in one of my old WDW books that you could rent Pal Mickey. Now, I'm only seeing things about buying him outright. Is the rental thing not happening anymore? Also, I read how some people would buy him and them pull out the part that did all the thinking and would just carry that around with them...I guess I have to see it first.

We bought one

I told my wife about Pal Mickey before our trip last week. At first she said it was way too expensive and a silly idea.

So I said okay and went on my merry way, just happy to be at WDW. Well about half way through our trip we met some people at dinner that had their Pal Mickey's all dressed up in different (home-made) cosutmes and that sealed the deal. I went right into the store at the Beach Club that night and bought our Pal Mickey. My wife bought a few of the outfits and plans on making some of her own.

We found him to be a lot of fun and a good way to pass the time if you do happen to be waiting for a show or the parade to start.

Get your Pal Mickey and enjoy.

To answer Redwench - no you can no longer rent Pal Mickey, only buy. And for those of you who think that you will get bored a CM told us that the Sorcerer Pal Mickey can be updated with a new chip when you come back to the park. I have no confirmation if that is true or not, but it would be nice to have PM say and do new things.

I've never been a big PM fan myself. He's a bit heavy to lug around. I like to travel light, and even try to find ways not to carry a wallet if I can avoid it. But PM is cool to experience if you've never seen one in action before. Without kids, I'm not sure how much fun he'll be. But I've been wrong before...

Pal Mickey's rental program was discontinued in 2004 because no one bothered to return him - they all wanted to keep him. What happened was, you were charged the full amount on your credit card. If you returned him by noon the following day, you'd be refunded the purchase amount less the $8 rental fee. But no one brought him back, so Disney decided to stop offering rentals.

Pal Mickey's a lot of fun. And contrary to the complaints that he's big or heavy, he's really not. Afterall, he is a toy marketed with kids in mind. (Though Disney quickly realized that they were getting as many adults and guests without kids buying them as guests who bought them for the kids.)

Pal Mickey can not be updated in terms of getting new phrases but he should be "current" for a year or so pending what attractions openn as he "ages." The older versions will continue to work however, so it's not like he has a time when he just won't talk anymore. The newer versions just offer more activities and updated content.

Check out www.palmickey.net if you want to see some adults who enjoy their Pals and some fun dress-up ideas for PM as well.
