I don't know if you can still do this, but when they first came out you could rent them....My friends and I did that and he was fun, I guess. I def. would not spend $60.oo on a new one....
The rental program stopped in 2004. Everyone opted to keep him, so they discontinued the rental because it just wasn't worth it.
The current edition is Sorcerer Pal Mickey dressed in his red robes and blue Sorcerer hat from Fantasia. He's the third version and retails for $65. I have the original (1.0) and HCOE (2.0) and I think they're a ton of fun. Contrary to the post a few up which said not many people have them, he is
quite popular and a real runaway success. Disney underestimated that just as many adults would buy him for themselves as they would for their kid.
You might want to check out
PalMickey.net which is a grown-up's Pal Mickey club. :animwink: Some people don't like him, and that's fine, it's really a personal preference thing, but I think he's pretty darn neat.
Oh and as for buying him used on ebay? I'd be careful about that if I were you. People often are misleading on their auctions - selling say, a 1.0 (which is three years old and three years out of current information at this point) dressed in one of the new outfits so that you don't realize he's the older edition. Or he might have been dropped/damaged/exposed to water and his sensor won't pick up transmissions. Since you won't know until you get him into the park, that "deal" at $50 might turn into $50 down the tubes. It's generally better to be safe than sorry. (Oh and for anyone who's a Passholder, if you purchase him at the World of Disney store in DtD, you can get 10% off your purchase there like any other product.)
Hope that helps!
