Paint Touchups!

Is it just me, or is "Mickey's Toontown Fair" looking a little shabby?I was there the other day, and I was saying to myself "They really need to paint this". All the little little things like in the line on the "Barnstormer" the poles really need to be touched up...And also all the buildings. Do you agree? Thanks! Post!

i think a lot of the Magic Kingdom needs touch ups....there is a lot of paint chipping on most poles and ride que bars.....:hammer:

I can't believe that people actually go to Disneyworld, with all it's Magic, splendor, and beauty...look around and then say " This place really needs a paint job!!":lol:

I think Disney Probably has one or two people on their payroll who make the decisions on when and what to repaint.

Some people complain when they go to Disney World.
I complain when I can't GO THERE. :lol: :lol:

Walt Disney would tell a story about a man who painted the parade poles on mainstreet, that was his job.That was his ONLY job, I think the point is attention to detail is not a priority in the Eisner era Disney.Sad but true, and did we really need another cookie cutter ride like alladin? Dumbo and astro orbiter weren't enough, zero creativity. sorry for the negativity.

i think the biggest disney fans(like myself) are the biggest critics and nitpickers of disney too like the paint.
as a whole disney does a great job at keeping all things disney fresh and clean not only disney parks and resorts but disney stores and cruise line too!
my neighbor is a retired painter of 40 years.also a disney fan like myself-was at disneyland at opening day in california.he raised some valid points on why disney is hard to keep day one fresh all the time (even though they come pretty darn close)
1-the amount of people that go through the parks is millions and millions a year(wdw is the biggest destination resort in the world)
so imagine all the people touching rubbing and scratching paint in lines poles etc.
2-florida heat does some major damge to fresh paint-paint in fla lasts only about half the time that it would in other areas of the country.
3- the most important aspect at wdw especially toon town-disney paints in almost all primary colors-black,red,purple,green(magical toonish colors)most colors used in fla r pastel type colors because they dont fade as quickly-but primary colors fade twice as fast and if u have a pole at disney that is red and a pole at another place in fla that is tannish (pastel) the red pole will look worse beacuse it will stand out more. i was at toon town 2 years ago-noticed fence at barn stormer need paint freshing up then cam back 3 months later-looked brand new-so chances are they are working on making it look great soon.

If you look through the Disney lore you will find stories of cm's whose job was to paint the hitching posts every night before the next day crowd arrived. They would go as far as doing calculations to to determine how long it would take something to dry based on the temperature and relative humidity at the time. This way nothing would be wet when guest began arriving in the morning.

Unfortunately, these days are gone. It just became too unrealistic, as the parks grew, to paint every chipped surface every night. One reason is that as the parks became more popular, they stayed open later. This reduced the amount of time for overnight maintenance both for logistical and guest satisfaction issues. A guest might not think chipped paint is very attractive, but they would be even less happy if their new white outfit was suddenly covered in black paint.

Secondly, its a labor issue. Labor rates have gone up for painters and other employees alike. But I would be willing to guess that park prices did not increase simultaneously at the same rate. If they had, very few people would be able to afford a Disney vacation these days. This means Disney has to pay more employees less money and not be able to attract quality tradesmen or they have to reduce the number of maintenance people in order to meet market rates.

It is the latter situation that DIsney has been working with for quite a while. For example, about five years back bus drivers' starting pay was near 5.95 an hour. The market around the country was 8 to 12 dollars an hour (even 5 years ago). New Disney drivers currently get $7.85. THis situation applies for many positions in the parks.

The bottom line is we can either accept the fact that Disney has to design a maintenance schedule for non safety related items that involves things looking a little worn form time to time ro be willing to cough up a heck of a lot more money for our vacations.

and Nite you bring up some good points about the state of the maintence, and that really disturbs me as to the current state of maintence. except that the parks , MK at least haven't stayed open any later then they did in the beginning , if anything there now closing eariler than they ever had in the past

WDW contracts out most of its paint jobs because it's far less expensive and frankly the contract workers do a better job. Of course, now you will often see painters in the parks during the day but that is a small price to pay for the better upkeep.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and didn't notice anything horrible. I didn't go on Goofy's Barnstormer, but I usually don't notice or worry about little things.

I was watching the Travel Channel special on IOA. It seems that their night shift does touch-ups every night.

i saw that about ioa and i started feeling really ashamed of disney. disney can do better than this,i was there last month and i wasnt feeling the magic like i used to. i was laying on a park bench with a friend and i just saw all these things that looked horrible.especially in toon town. i know it gets alot of wear by the little kids but the look to me was just not acceptible

as i always say disney really does do great job in trying to keep park sparkling clean-sometimes just takes a while-also from what i hear -disney forcasts attendance levels and tries to rehab during slower times-ie march was forcasted to be slower:sohappy: :king: :sohappy:

Paint jobs can vary in speed Disney decides to work on them. I.E. at DL, the paint on Pirates (I think) was peeling, and they fixed it in a week. Toontown in general was peeling/fading and it took them nearly a year to get around to it.
