Overwhelmed by off-property hotel choices

I've been to Disney World many, many times but this will be my first visit to Disneyland. I can't afford to stay on property but I'm really overwhelmed with choosing an off-property hotel that is safe, clean and where I can get to the parks without using my car. I needs recommendations:
  • I'm a solo traveler.
  • Under $150 per night.
  • November 21-24, 2021 (2 days in the parks)
I haven't visited since the pandemic, so here are a few thoughts based on my experiences/research from The Before Times.

For safety reasons, I prefer staying in hotels with interior doors. It just feels more secure to me. For this reason there are a lot of go to budget options that were out of consideration for me. You may feel differently!

Someone mentioned the Suncoast. My sister and I stayed there in Feb 2020. It was very fresh and clean and we found it to be walkable. If I was on my own, I'd look at taking the little Anaheim hotel bus that is offered for a ride back in the evening. It's just past GardenWalk if that means anything to you. If you do walk, you'll get to stroll by the light up llamas that @TP2000 is so fond of.

Maybe it has changed but I read bad things about the Sheraton Four Points as far as cleanliness and security go so I didn't feel comfortable staying there.

The Sheraton Park Hotel and the Anaheim Marriott are both in your price range for your dates and I would consider both of them walkable. The Sheraton could definitely use a refresh but it was totally fine when I stayed there in November 2019. I haven't stayed at the Marriott but it gets decent reviews too.

I hope you have a great trip and report back about what you chose!

Yeah, I'm a brand new poster and that photo automatically showed up for some reason. I had planned to change it yesterday and crap got in the way. Doing that today. Thanks for reminding me!

Ah. Totally understandable. But you were about to start a refreshing new trend! :D

Should I be looking at the Disney side of I5 if I'm going to walk to the parks?

Most definitely yes. The Anaheim Resort District sprawls out on the edges, so even if a Good Neighbor Hotel touts as being in the "Resort District", check Google Earth first to see exactly where it is.

And if you want to sound like a local, say your sentence above like this instead... 🤣

"Should I be looking at the Disneyland side of The 5 if I'm going to walk to the park?"

A little off-topic, but as long as we're talking about hotels there, I want to put in a word (of warning) about the Anaheim Hilton at the Convention Center. At least for our room, the front door opened directly into the bathroom door (and you can guess where I'm going with this). Yes, a hotel construction worker came barging in without knocking one day while I was in the bathroom. Oops. The front desk knocked a bit off the room, but still ...

Our offsite hotel of choice has been the Anaheim Marriott next to the convention center. Definitely the nicest off site hotel I’ve stayed at. With that said I haven’t been to the the new JW or Westin. Lobby has a bar and decent restaurant. Prices are usually pretty reasonable too. Its a 1 mile walk to the park so not too convenient but that’s the same walk as the walk to the parking structure so it’s a wash. Also if you don’t have strollers to worry about you can just hop on a shuttle that stops right at the hotel. We choose to walk because folding the stroller is a pain in the @$$

The JW and the Westin are at the top of my list for my next trip! I really want to check out the roof deck at the Westin. Have any of you been there yet?

No, I don't think any of us have. Has it even opened yet?

If you remember from a year or so ago, I already claimed my barstool up there...

Seriously gang, I don't know who this concept art tramp thinks she is, but she's sitting on my barstool....

And what is she even drinking? Crayola Rose'? She realizes the cute bartender is ignoring her, right?

The Residence Inn on Katella (by the conv. center) is just across the road, south of DCA. It's a short walk - maybe 10 minutes - to the Esplanade/main gate area. Very nice rooms. It might be at the top of your price range. It's been about 4 or 5 years since I stayed there.

One of the RI's in Anaheim was recently remodeled (I can't remember which one, I saw pictures on Linkedin) and it looked nice.

RI would be a great option- the in room kitchens can help save money since you won't have to eat out every meal (There's a neighborhood Walmart and Vons within like 5 minutes of the Resort).

If you're a solo traveler and just want something close, I'd honestly just find the cheapest room I could find. Especially if you don't care about breakfast, the pool, etc. and just want a bed, shower, and toilet.

The Travelodge off Ball (near Mickey and Friends) looks to be about $100/night on those dates. The rooms were clean and well maintained when I stayed there in early '19. The breakfast sucks but honestly the room is cheap enough you can probably Uber and buy breakfast in the park and still come out ahead. It's a bit of a walk to the main gate though- but I'm also not seeing anything right next to Disneyland for less than about $200/night.

I’ve done dozens of solo trips to DL and my favorite hotel is the Holiday Inn on Walnut. It’s a further walk but it’s on the residential side of Disneyland rather than the busy side so the walk is along a quiet tree lined street rather than the chaos you get on Harbor. My other favorite is the Best Western on Harbor directly across from the main gate, that’s probably out of the $150 price range though. Most of the hotels on harbor aren’t fancy, just convenient places to sleep.

As a solo traveler I’d either stay at the Holiday Inn on Walnut or one of the Harbor hotels south of the bridge but north of Katella. I’ve stayed by the convention center a few times and although the hotels are nicer you often end up walking past homeless and/or mentally unstable people… as a solo traveler I find that very intimidating.

I've stayed at the Clarion a couple times. You can cross the street and walk into the Toy Story parking lot to ride the shuttle to the park instead of walking.

Yikes! We're actually booked to stay there in early December. It'll be my bf's first trip to Disneyland, and my first in 15-ish years. (And my first multi-day visit, too)

Got an amazing rate because I booked it back in February with the hope that things would be open and normal-enough for a birthday trip.

I'll give a word of caution, people are finally figuring out that there are no trams a Mickey and Friends, but that there are busses at Toy Story. We waited 15 minutes for the bus at 11:00AM on a pretty light day inbound and 20 plus minutes outbound at 11:30PM.

I wonder what happened to the OP who started this thread?

We poured our hearts and souls into advice for the OP. I even posted a photo of a concept art tramp sitting in my barstool, and was only slightly appeased by the fact the concept art cute bartender was ignoring her.

I wonder what the OP decided? I wonder if the OP is still alive?

Well what about you? You give a peek into partial details, but leave us hanging. Who took your seat? Did you recognize her? Was there potential for romance? Why is the bartender ignoring her? Is he busy working? Does he know her and not like her? What's wrong with her? Is she trying to drink her troubles away all by herself at a hotel bar while others enjoy fireworks and entertainment? Did the bartender once have a relationship with her that went sour when she left him for a college kid that wears a mouse costume in his intern job and when he followed her to the area he regretted it because he left a good job and now she's trying to reconcile but his heart is in too much pain? What is it?

You are taking the exact same trip as me. Maybe we'll walk by each other a few times while we are there.

I did my hotel search in August and booked at the Kings Inn Anaheim which is on Katella and about a 10-15 min walk to the parks. Agoda had a great deal and got the room for about $60/night.

In fact, they have a 60% off sale right now on the same hotel for about $87/night. That's pretty good for the distance and being only a month away. I've never stayed there before, but the reviews seem pretty favorable.
